Great story, but it will fill up the CGs faster.
I wish she had not made the statement that no special license is required to drive an RV, as it really depends on state and other varying factors.

I think a majority of the general public doesn't have any idea of what RVing is, and now in todays busy times how it can pull a family together for quality "family time". I grew up in a Rving family and once I broke away from the nest I started tent camping with my wife. She came from a camping family too. The rest is history...now just moving up the progression of larger RV's... From the CNN video I like listening to a persons terminology of RV terms. She was talking about the sewage..... I just keep thinking about Robbin William's move "RV the Movie"......I think the movie gave people different ideas what is involved in dumping the sewage.

I know of no state that requires a special license to drive MOST <40' RVs.
Which states are a concern?

i'm not going to look it up again but Calif has some vehicle code dealing with special license requirements for towing trailers above a certain weight, i think it is trailers with rating over 10K pounds? or maybe 15K pounds?,
and I believe both my my 31' and my 33' 5'rs put me into its requirements for an extra stamp on my driver's license,

i went to our DMV once to inquire on it but the 3 people there i talked to were clueless on it and i left without it

I don't think that's quite right. I believe many states have 26k lbs limit and I think most 32+' with a toad will exceed that.

I agree that, if nothing else, the statement in the news is not good since it's way too generic. I think it should have been something like 'Many states may not require a special license to drive some RVs. Check with local regulations on specific requirements ...' I also feel that it diminishes the extra caution that should be taken and dissuades education. Driving a mh (even a small one) is not like driving a sedan or a minivan.

On the licensing issue,

Here is a recent thread on this subject and some answers----

Heck, I just looked at the dates of the post and I found an old one--- Sorry. I had just read of this issue recently here on irv2--- But where?

.
I believe that it the GVW itself that has to be over 26K pounds before a special license is required. Our RV has a GVW of 22K and we can drive it with a standard Class C license.

I suspect that many states are different so I'm not even going to try to know the requirements for each however I believe several have something like '... a combination of vehicles that has a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more ...' requiring a special license (I'm in Ontario, Canada and have have that (although ours is only about 24,000 lbs)) and with a toad, I think many RVs exceed that).

All that really matters is that drivers need to know what applies in their home state and should look it up.

"All that really matters is that drivers need to know what applies in their home state and should look it up." That's the best advice to anyone.

I am in Louisiana and the limit is 26k as mentioned above, HOWEVER, if it is an RV then NO SPECIAL LICENSE or CDL is required. They are exempt.

It is easy to get side tracked here
the important message is that RVing with your family is a fun way to have a vacation
it could even be cost effective \see now I am going to get them off the licencing thing and back onto whether it costs more
