Compounding & Waxing, a Few Thoughts

Just finished compounding and waxing our new-to-us 1999 33-foot National Sea View. This was no small job. Using an orbital buffer I bought on Amazon for less than $40, there was still plenty of old fashioned hand-and-arm work around the many decals on this old coach. Now that it's done here are a few lessons I learned from the experience:

1. Buy good coumpound and wax products. In my case I started with 3M marine compound and finished with Nu Finish auto polish.

2. Have a good sturdy ladder. Enough said.

3. Be careful working around decals. If they're already peeling take a razor and remove whe worst edges. You're only going to do this job once so take the time to do it right.

4. Don't put too much pressure on the buffer. A light touch is the key to good results.

5. Don't use cheap polishing and applicator pads with your orbital buffer.

6. Don't expect miracles. Even with all your work you'll probably still find spots where you'll want to go back and try again.

That's it, just wanted to pass along my thoughts on this subject. This is one job I hope I'll only have to do once in my life.

I did my front overhang on my class c and your right. I used the gel coat restorer and it looked like brand new. I used meguiars marine wax and looks like showroom new. But yes I found a few spots that had to be retouched.

Well, it is good to get tips on how to maintain our older RV's.
Compounding to clean the surface is one of those tasks that all of us have done or need to do.
Waxing with the best polish completes that task.
However, on our 19 year old coach, that has not been the solution to achieve a respectful shine.
Having done all that is noted, I took the jump to try ZEP.
After using this product for two years, I can recommend it.
Check the posts regarding ZEP.
Great shine, easy to clean and to update.
Recommend it.
Does help to fill the small crazing that happens after a good number years.
Regards,
JimB

I clear coated mine after removing the oxidation and touching up/replacing decals. http://www.irv2.com/forums/f101/clea...er-340768.html

Not for the faint-of-hearted.

I plan on hitting it with Nu-Finish once my ambition returns.
