Cost of campground during pandemic.
Some of the private campgrounds are able to open up with restrictions. I am on a fixed income with no pension. Private places charge around $50.00 a night. The bath house/showers are closed. No swimming pool or planned activities. Our camping club can't gather for breakfast or potluck dinner. Masks and social distancing are in place. I realize the campground owners have fixed costs. My vote is to stay home. Waiting to hear if our state parks will be open as they are much cheaper. I have reservations at two state parks. The question is should we have to pay full price when are amenities are severly cut?

I believe in your post you stated your preference to vote with your wallet and stay home.
A campgrounds cost don’t necessarily drop because the amenities are closed.
Are the rates fair when you can not use them? Do not know but as you stated we can stay home and not support them.

This was touched on in the Park Closures due to COVID-19 concerns thread. Park's have fixed fees to pay - franchise fees (if they're one), utilities, do maintenance/repairs - regardless of whether or not they have reservations. As I suggested there, you can try asking if you can get a discount or an "off season" rate (as it's called here in the East). It never hurts to ask & all they can do is say no. At which point you can either agree, find somewhere else to go or stay home.

Stay home then. But if you do, that campground may be an open field, a shopping mall or a bunch of condos next time you want to stay there. In NY State we aren't even sure when (or if) our summer site will be open though supposedly 5/15, but we will pay the full seasonal shot when they open regardless of the fact they wont have any amenities available.

We are full time for 7 years now. We have decided to curtail our travels for the unforeseen future. I would rather be alive, healthy and bored rather than sick or even worse...dead.
So we wear our mask and only venture out for food. We socail distance and walk and ride bikes out doors.

At least your campgrounds are open. We're still waiting for ours to open.

Even during normal times, we don't pay $50 for camping. We call around for a better price or in our case will sign up as a volunteer if we really want to stay in a high rent district. You always have options!

$50 a night..... not for me. I prefer to average paying $15 a night with PPA, or boondock anywhere I can pull over.

No one ever said RVing was inexpensive.
RV parks are very expensive to run. They are not making money hand over fist.
Taxes, health fees, propane inspections, water, sewer, electric, WIFI, cable tv, advertising, staff, insurance, maintenance, and the list goes on. State and federal and county campgrounds are subsidized so lower cost. But we still pay taxes for them. I for one am super happy we have RV parks available almost everywhere in the US.
My camping plans include almost every month this year.

Could you please explain PPA? I've not heard the term before, but I am interested in learning ways to camp at reasonable rates.

PassPort America.

It's great for stops while in route to destinations but most campgrounds have restrictions like weekdays only or 1-2 might stays max. During our 3-5 travel days, we can usually find 1 or 2 participating camp grounds along the way. The rates are 1/2 of their reg rate. Sometimes the camp grounds are run down, but still worth FHU's for $20/night.

You are likely to find the price of many items rising due to the shutdowns. I would guess an open RV park has probably less than half their normal business, at best. The revenue from that 50% of normal business still has to pay 100% of their costs. It is going to be the same with restaurants that are only allowed to open at 25% or 50% of their normal capacity. If airlines fly with only half the seats occupied they are going to raise the price on those occupied seats, the logic being only people who have to fly are flying. Cutting the price isn't going to make someone who cannot or will not patronize a business suddenly change their minds and if someone really wants to eat out, needs to fly on a plane or is traveling and needs to stop some place in their RV, an extra $5.00 a meal, or $100 an airline seat (where the middle seat is now empty... a big plus) or $10.00 a night for an RV site isn't going to stop them.

Thanks! I just checked out their website. I saw a campground that we really enjoy and it is indeed priced at nearly 1/2 the rate we last paid.

I had the same question. One of the communications issues with using acronyms on a community site. Need to explain what the acronym stands for at first use.
