Don't even think about trying to bring any handgun into Canada....long guns are a different matter...they will check on your record and if they discover any past offenses for driving while intoxicated they will not allow you into the country with the long gun. If you have a clean record you will be required to purchase a special permit to bring the firearm into Canada....last time I heard it cost $50 per long gun.

The past DWI record prohibition resulted in a friend being denied entry last year on a hunting trip. That suprise came at the time he tried to cross. His friend (traveling with him) was permitted entry but he was denied entry because of the DWI. I believe it is possible to obtain a permit for a specific long gun in advance of your trip. Permits are good for one year.

The gun issue is a huge bone of contention with Americans coming to Canada.
We Canadians do not understand who you need protection from. Easy, criminals who want to do you harm

While travelling the USA we went to church each Sunday. We were shocked to
see people wearing sidearms into church. Has the USA reached the point where you actually need protection from someone at church? Yes, several active shooters have been stopped by armed parishioners and even priests

Canadians travel to the US every year by the thousands.
We study your rules, laws, government, etc.
We do not question the fact when dog food, green veggies, etc, are confiscated.
That is the way it is.
When I came back from the States this year, I was asked if I had any chicken from three certain states. I checked and said "NO". I was passed through.
The following week, NO CHICKEN, EGGS, were allowed.
SO WHAT. This is what it is.

Come to Canada. Enjoy the scenery, the food, the culture, etc.
Quit complaining that the rules are different from the USA.

We Canadians spend millions of dollars each year and keep the US economy alive.
We like to be welcomed and would love to be able to spend more time and money.

Yes.....rules are different.........look them up before you travel.
And, as you said, rules are different. One of the things we can do is choose where we go and spend our money.
