My friend has been a heavy duty mechanic in the oil fields. His remarks were about the transition years and their problems. He read these posts and asked if everyone knew that the DEF system is not being universally put on all new 2019 diesels? He was told that by his son who still works in the fields.

We have a 2008 coach on a 2007.5 Chevrolet chassis. They equipped their Duramax with a DPF from 2007.5 to 2010 before switching to DEF.

Heavy Mechanic in oil fields? He's not talking about road going diesels - and we are.

Pretty sure most typical construction equipment (Think bulldozers, graders etc) now uses it.

I think the really big stuff (2000HP+) still doesn't require it.

But yeah, tremendous difference to my Asthma between our old truck and new...Old truck I had trouble loading it when idling - I really felt the particulate- new truck smells way cleaner then these dirty gasoline powered cars people now drive

. Exhaust pipe is still shiny to!

I believe, as others have stated, that 2012 was when DEF equipped coaches first appeared. Your friend might be referring to the fact that on coaches up to, I believe 2016, the DEF tank is on the passenger side of the coach.

This presents a bit of a problem when you're fueling at a truck stop as the DEF pump is on the driver side of the coach. There are a couple of solutions.

One is if where you're fueling is not busy, you can turn your coach around and enter the pump island from the opposite direction. If you choose to try this just make sure you're in an end lane, or you could find yourself trapped if you happen to be towing four down.

The other solution is to carry your own DEF, which you can purchase at Walmart among other places, and add it to your DEF tank where ever you like.

My 2017 coach has the DEF tank on the driver side, so once I fuel I have no problem pulling forward a bit to fill the DEF tank. If I have a truck waiting behind me, I let him know what I'm going to be doing.

DEF is a little bit of inconvenience but after learning how much it reduces the exhaust gas pollutants, I wouldn't buy a diesel without it.

Say what? To my knowledge all Diesel engines in North America and Europe are required to set emission regulations. The exception was Navistar (MaxForce engines) that were using in cylinder technologies, up until federal litigation forced them to alter their strategy. Since then, they have been using Cummins after-treatment systems on the max force

Not all vehicles used in the oil industry are multi thousand horse powered. One of the companies up there has a whole fleet of vehicles with the same motor as his coach. The no DEF claim came from a seminar his son was at. I am still a complete newb when it comes to diesel power so I am just relaying what I have been told.

In my pickup, the engine runs clean enough to not need a DPF, but it has one. I also have a DEF tank and SCR (look that one up if you want to know how it all works). The DEF may even "steam clean" the DPF as I drive. I've never had the EDC (yay for acronyms!) tell me that I was in the middle of a DPF regen cycle, so things are either working really well, or the whole system is somehow broken and the ECM doesn't have a way to tell me.

Either way, ignorance is indeed bliss!

DPF came out in EPA models in 2007 for Cummins and they added DEF in EPA models for 2010.

My owner's manual says to add 2 gal. of DEF every 5K miles. I've got 11K on the truck now and have added DEF twice. I get good mileage, have no real diesel fumes smell, and really don't even think about it that much. You guys that are filling up on DEF when you fill up a the gas station- I'm guessing you put on thousand of miles a season? Or just topping off?

Some might be driving motor homes that get single digit MPGs.

Lots of folks cringe when new technology in vehicle engines is introduced. I remember when unleaded gasoline was first introduced, and the complaining that went along with it. Now, all we have is unleaded, and unleaded is an accepted fuel. DEF is new technology and I too was curious about how it would affect my diesel pickup. When I look at my diesel tailpipe today, that tailpipe is clean. My previous diesels tailpipes were always dirty. I like clean.

I'm in the oil field: we buy diesel by the truckload and DEF by the tote (275 gallons). The big engines out here all use DEF the little ones on light plants and generators and whatnot do not.

I spend *a lot* less time waiting on regens than I used to...
