"How do sidewinds affect RVs that are traveling on the highway?

RVs traveling at highway speeds are most at risk of tipping over when it’s windy. "

Wait, there has to be wind for there to be a risk from wind? Never would have thought of that.

Where did they get their numbers? If my motorhome lost half its weight, it would flip at wind speeds I'm unlikely to be driving in. If I somehow had an 8,000 foot long 5th wheel, that weighed 1 pound per foot, it would start to slide at 25 MPH.

Not the best edited article I've ever read.

High Wind warnings were Posted when 40 mph wind speeds were constant

Watched many semis not heed warnings and got flipped over on I-15 NB Southern California

Gantry Crane operations at Power Plant were suspended at 40mph

Many years ago an irv2.com member calculated the side wind force to tip over HIS 5th wheel RV. His calculations included height of appliances inside the 5er, slide sizes+weights, etc. If I remember correctly it was 84-85 MPH.
Gee, that must have been somewhere around 20 years ago.

Good basic info. For us it is get off the road at 40mph, put in slides at 40mph, take down Dish Sat. at 30mph. Open the bourbon at 10 mph only in camp

I have the jpeg saved to my laptop. You can find the same or similar charts online by doing a search for "trucker's wind speed chart"

The chart in the original post is laughable. My 43' coach probably weighed 15,500# before the body was added. If I planned with that chart, I would have to travel after dark when it calmed down. It looks like someone sat at a computer and plugged in numbers at random and did the math. However, we all need to be aware of windy conditions while on the road and just park it if uncomfortable.
