Dash Cam for Recording Scenic Drive?

Are there any dash cameras that can record scenic drives for playback later? I am heading into a lot of scenic areas in a few months (Arizona, Utah, Montana, Wyoming) and I thought this could be a great way to get pictures/video.

Just about any dash cam will do that. I've got a garmin Dashcam 45 that uses a microSD card to store short videos. It even has a mode where you can set it up to do time-lapse videos.

Go pro and mount outside your vehicle. Don't need a dash cam for that.

We recently bought a Rove R2-4K dash cam and it does a fantastic job of recording the scenic drives!

Pretty much all of them will do that.

Within this link are several video clips from our Good Sam's Club recent trip to Arkansas. Some of the video is sped up to save viewing time.

This is not MY video. I have a different dash cam, but it does the same thing.

Any dash cam will work for what you want to do. Because they are generally facing directly forward to record traffic, the might not give the best view of the area your are going through. My choice for that type of recording is any type of action cam. They can be mounted anywhere and generally have much better image quality then most dash cams.

As a side note, you do not need to spend a lot of money to get a decent action cam. On our last trip I managed to forget the bag containing my action cam gear and left it at home. When I discovered my mistake later, I bought an inexpensive Gpro knock off at Walmart, it worked fine and it's image quality is very good.

I have a DOD brand dash cam that I bought because of the length and quality of the HD video it takes. On a trip into Yellowstone, I pulled the card and looked at the quality of the video. It was great.

The only issue....if you used it to take scenic video, you would probably have to watch hours of video to find the segments you want. You would probably want to edit it to.

I mounted mine in the lower left corner of the windshield and turn it so it's looking straight down the road. That gives a pretty god view.

I use a GoPro Hero 7 with a windshield suction mount. This has stabilization in it and I use it on my electric bike and on walks while camping also. I don't have a dash cam besides this as it works so well.

I used to have a GoPro Hero 2 (gave it to a neighbor kid a few nights ago to video his RC cars). It did a good job also, but it is not stabilized.

The below video was shot with the Hero 2 a few years ago. The camera was mounted on the rear view mirror on our Subaru on this trip. (set your player to 1080p for the best playback)

https://youtu.be/6D5uW_u8EQc

The Hero 7 does a MUCH better job of this kind of video.

I use my DJI Osmo Pocket for this. I have a hard mount in my Jeep and a suction mount in our coach. The reason I chose this method over a go pro is that I (my wife) can control the camera head remotely if I want to focus more on the side of the road, or possible tilt the head up or down on grades. It really all depends on what you want quality wise.

We use the GoPro hero 3+ and it works great. Lots of different mounting hardware came with it for use in different applications, have even used it under water.

I don't know the make of mine but it was cheap on Ebay. It does 1080p to a micro sd card. The video is good quality. When I it use for scenic drives like Yellowstone I mount it to the windshield on the driver side of the mirror. That way I can swivel it to capture things of interest. You may to download your videos each day depending on the size of your sd card.

I use a Gopro for that exact scenario. I used to use it when I ran an exotic car club. Now it records our adventures in the RV.

I got a dash cam and when trying to mount it on my windshield the camera is against the windshield. I am concerned that the vibration will damage the camera and/or windshield.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I have three different Dash Cams and they all mount "pretty much the same", but differently.

Without a picture it is hard to diagnose your mounting issue, but my guess would be that you have all or part of the mounting system upside down.

Are you using a hard mount to the glass or a suction cup mount?
