Dashboard A/C Heating control

With a 19 yr old RV there is always something sneaking in...I recently purchased this 'ol" Georgie Boy. Everything seems to work except the dash a/C and Heat. The dashboard controls are just like I have seen in many vehicles.. A selector for A/C, Max A/C, and heat,,with a fan setting with several levels,,and a rotating knob that swings from cold,,to heat..variable levels.. The fan switch works,, the selector for A/C etc seems to work... the temp knob rotates more than the 360 degree sweep and seems to change nothing.. right after purchase the dash would blow cool air when trying to use the dash A/C,,not cold so I assumed it needed a recharge of refridgerant.. then I have realized it doesn't go into heat mode...you can rotate the knob and it changes nothing..and blows cold air. Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?

Look behind the knob and see if the cable is moving

What I would do.. is on pass side inside.. at pass side kick plate.. use magnet to find screws that hold kick plate to dash.. then use cellphone with camera and flash and record up under dash on far left side.. you should see all the motors and levers that operate the HVAC.. look for something broken.. they are all made of a white plastic.. clean them and lube them.. pull blower motor.. and again use cell phone with camera and flash and record inside blower housing.. and to far right and left.. as far as you can reach.. you are looking for anything broken.. use your favorite spray lube on any blend doors you see.. often the hinges need lube.. you are looking for critters.. they just love to nest, short out wires.. eat wires and cause havoc .. when things go haywire and don't make sense keep critters in the back of your mind all the time..
Also.. cell phone with camera and flash and record is your best friend and fits where your head cannot.. so use that..
Next.. just tracing cables and wires..
Good luck and let us know what you did and maybe better members then me will help you

I know this is a basic question, but are you sure the set screw in the knob is tight against the rod? An older system like yours (and even mine which is only 7 years old) is all mechanical. Recently, I noticed the set screws were backed out on most of the knobs, so the knob could spin nearly 360°.

Thank you all for the advice.. the phone camera is a good idea I had not thought about.. I did pull the knob and it pulled off easily.. didn't have appropriate light so will continue that angle as well. Again,,,thanks for the advice!

OK...update.. I discovered that the problem is the knob for temp control on the panel..it is cracked and not turning the shaft thus not moving the valve adjustment in the heater hose..or anything else..my new problem is finding the correct replacement knob! any advice.. again 2002 Georgie Boy Landau,,,on a Ford Chassis..just one knob..the one that controls the temp..not fan speed or AC select...those all seem fine. Again advice is appreciated.
