I prefer to think of it as if I roll over in bed and my backside sticks out from under the covers, I move the blanket so it covers my nether regions again.

When I started this thread I had hoped to see more understanding of how geography plays a role in how we perceive DST. I don't think it's "silly" that I don't want to spend two months in winter when sunrise is around 9am. That is what fulltime DST would mean where I live. The blanket analogy is also way off--rearranging the blanket so it is more useful more of the time is closer to what happens when we change our clocks twice a year. For those living in southern areas where it doesn't make as much difference, if you don't want to change I don't really care. Just don't force that decision on people where it does make a difference.
For those on the forum from northern areas, please tell me why you would want a later sunrise in winter. It doesn't make any sense to me.

totally agree. i just “retired” from my retirement “job”...school crossing guard. with FT DST kids will be walking and bussing to school in the morning darkness. we have maybe a dozen clocks in the house that need to be reset. takes me all of 15-minutes. no big deal.

I don't care where the sun is when I'm driving to or at work. I care where the sun is when I'm not at work. The later the sun is up, the more I can stuff into life. On my trip to Alaska, the GPS said the sunset was 11:35 pm, it was AWESOME.

Personally, I’d just like them to pick one and stick with it. Farmers will get up early if need to, work late if they need to. Opt for the one that give the folks that work 9-5 some time in the evening to play with there kids. But quit the changing.

So something that opens at 8 am every day could just open an hour earlier or later depending on what they think their seasonal needs are. Right now a business that opens at 8 am local time in the Eastern time zone every calendar day of the year actually opens at 8 am EST for half the year and 7 am EST the other half. They just don't call it 7 am EST, they call it 8 am EDT instead.

And I thought about it as hard as I could so maybe I'm reversed on which way the hour goes but you get the idea. I don't need the government to tell me what time it is. I just need my cell phone.
This is exactly what I proposed to my staff...they said it wouldn’t work I said watch.

I think instead of just moving an hour around, we should do a whole month instead. Get rid of February, and add a month after July. I'd rather have more summer and less winter.

The biggest concern I hear in Cali. for not going to DSt all the time is most people will have to drive to work in the dark and children will have to walk to school in the dark and that will bring on more accidents and deaths. Soooo, what do they do in Alaska. Iceland, Finland, Greenland, northern Canada and Russia ???? In the winter lots of places get only 3 to 5 hrs of light in a day. You only go to school or work in those hrs????
Just wondering

our local paper stated that the time change is confusing to many people. confusing? those people must be easily confused.

There is the real crux of the issue. The DST critics keep trying to equate hours of the 24 hour clock with the hours of sunlight. There are several stories out there about why DST was instituted in the first place. Most involve productivity and appear to be valid but affect some people differently than others depending on whether their main activity is in the morning or the late afternoon/evening. Another is energy savings by having factories open during daylight hours as opposed to early morning before sunrise. Still another is a potential safety issue for schoolkids: without DST, kids may be walking to school in the dark in the morning during periods in the spring and fall.

As with a lot of issues nowadays, the controversy seems to be perpetuated by those who don't see any DST benefit for themselves, but refuse to consider that it may be beneficial for others.

I also suggest the claims of negative health effects of DST are just plain rubbish and the actual effect is no more serious than jet lag.

We are in Arizona and like not having DST. However the state keeps moving around. During the winter, we are part of Colorado (mountain time zone) while in the summer, we are part of California (pacific time zone). I wish they didn't have to keep relocating our state...

Cool

The concept of the passing of time, is imaginary, just as the calendar and dates. Pure inventions of the human mind because we somehow cannot exist without references.

Animals exist without any reference to "time" or "date" or day of the week or how "old" they are. Only humans seem to need the imaginary structure of "time".

Since I retired, I almost never look at a clock. I don't have any idea what "time I got up today, or "when" I slept last night. I woke up when my body was ready to, went to sleep when that was needed. Clocks are irrelevant unless you want to worship at the alter of "time". (Or, have a doctor's appointment, doesn't pay to annoy the office staff). That's what I think.
