De-Winterizing w/ Residential Refrigerator

My residential frig with ice maker has a water filter inside. If I take the filter out, water will not flow to either the ice maker or to the dispenser on the frig door. Last fall, in order to get antifreeze in the lines to the ice maker and the dispenser, I had to have a filter in line. This spring while de-winterizing, it was difficult to get fresh water through the filter clogged with antifreeze in order to flush out the ice maker and dispenser. After flushing all antifreeze out of the RV, I decided to run a bleach solution (9 oz. to 70 gal fresh water tank) through to sanitize the water system. Again, in order to get bleach water through the frig lines, I had to replace the water filter with a new one ($50). Apparently the bleach in the water has clogged the new water filter and I'm off to the store to purchase another new water filter. Is there a better way to do this?

i don't know your model pf refrigerator. we have a fridgidaire and i'm assuning yours is similar.

some things:

buy a 'dummy' or bypass filter cartridge. it is basically the filter housing with nothing inside. when you go to winterize take the real filter cartridge out and put in the dummy cartridge. this will allow you to pump the antifreeze through the cartridge and out to the water dispenser and ice maker.

you can get generic replacement filters from several sources online that are no where near as expensive as the manufacturer specified filter. i use them and they work fine. if you drained the filter you took out you can reinstall it after you flush the antifreeze.

if you use a respectable filter on the incoming water line you can just leave the dummy cartridge in the refrigerator fulltime as the outside filter does the filtering. do you really need two? one outside and one in the refrigerator. one of the attributes of the dummy filter is to use it when the refrigerator is installed in a house with a while house filter system.

there are some tips for getting antifreeze into the ice maker. either use a jumper to manually cycle the ice maker a few times until the antifreeze comes out. or, on our model i found a service technicians sheet that has many diagnostic test on it for the refrigerator that you invoke from the operator panel. one of those test is to open the ice maker water valve. when i am putting antifreeze in i invoke this test a couple of times until i have antifreeze coming out. much faster than waiting for pink ice.

hope this helps

Now my ice maker has quit working. Don't know if the antifreeze burned it out or what. Diagnostics tomorrow. I know my winterizing procedure for the frig is definitely going to change even if I just blow the water out with air and leave it at that.

Well turns out the valve or line was frozen or clogged with ice. I defrosted everything and started over with the help of a hair dryer and we're making ice again. Ready to hit the road after sitting at home for the last 11 months.

kind of ironic that the ice is keeping the ice maker from working.
