Teacher Moves RV onto School Grounds after Surgery

When it came time for an Albany High School teacher to take a little medical leave, she surprised her students and colleagues with an unusual request. WAFB's Anna Adair has the story.
Mrs. Thornton appears to be an average high school teacher, until her students describe her. Mandi Coslan says, "Well, everybody thought she was a little 'who-who,' but this just proved it (laugh)." Even her boss, the principal, agrees. Bruce Chaffin says, "I think Mandy said it best. She's a little off."
We've all heard of people taking work home with them, but Albany High School teacher, Wanda Thornton, has put her own spin on that scenario. Thornton says, "I recall some of them saying, 'Are you crazy?' And then, some of the co-workers said, 'Oh my gosh, you love work that much?' I said, 'Yeah, I worry about my kids.'"
Mrs. Thornton had to have surgery in the middle of the school year. When doctor's told her she couldn't drive to work for weeks, she decided she'd just move to work. No surgery was putting a hold on this teacher or, as she says, holding her students back, so when her husband came up with a plan, Mrs. Thornton took action
She says, "We just moved the RV up here on Sunday and after that, we just started staying here." Chaffin says, "I've been in education for 21 years, but this is a first. I've had them try to get off campus, but never try to stay on it." Thornton says, "You know, they knew how I was before, and this just showed them even more I was there for them."
Mrs. Thornton lived on campus for eight days. She was cleared by the doctor and is back home but says she misses stepping out her front door and stepping onto campus.
