DEF error in California

Just saw on the news tonight that there is a new Chevron station in Beaumont, CA, that has a DEF pump built-in with the regular pumps including diesel. It is identified clearly as DEF (as shown on TV).

It was stated that 19 cars in four weeks have had to be towed away for pumping DEF into their fuel tanks. DEF was shown to be $2.69 a gal whereas regular fuel was $3.50 plus.

People must have just looked at the cheaper price not understanding what they were doing. Expensive mistake for sure!

Be careful out there!

At least it won't cost them $12000 to fix the issue unless they hydro-locked their engine.

I thought only us diesel guys did this stuff!

Heck could have been diesel cars...

I do really appreciate that on the truck pumps they have extra cover for the DEF hose however.

Watch some day the gov. will require a special shape for DEF nozzles...

As a truck driver, I always hope to get the one that won't click off constantly!

The clicking off is caused by not having a circular magnet at the filler (or noozle). DEF tanks have this. Not diesel and gas fillers.
This can also be fixed by purchasing magnet for the noozle. Google it.

When we first too delivery of our coach, I wondered if our DEF tank had the magnet built-in. I tried a magnet collar offered by the fuel station and it didn't work so ours is apparently in there already.

If a magnet is needed, I wonder how these folks could pump DEF into a regular tank? Or even a diesel tank? I thought the industry would prevent something like this from happening since it is SO catastrophic to the engine.

I thought the magnet was a safety feature to start DEF flow. I know that I have to hold the flow lever 'just right' for the DEF to prevent it from constantly clicking off. Once it starts, I hardly move a muscle as not to cause the DEF to click off. My hand hurts..

On the original post, "You CANT cure stupid"

As far as the comments on the magnets is concerned, we've been running DEF coaches for almost 100,000 miles and have never hit a pump where I had to get a magnet to make the DEF flow. I believe they first thought to make that part manditory, but it never really came about. The reason I know that I've never hit a pump that way, is that I have installed an additional 15 gal DEF tank behind the engine so I don't have to hunt up stores and/or stations in the remote areas of Alaska and northern Canada. I take the large agriculture tank cover off my aux tank and DEF pumps normally... Every time. There might be some of those wacky pumps still out there, but we've never run into one. Of course I won't drive in California either, so maybe that explains it.
