After I discovered this(by re-reading the instructions) I simply unplug the wiring on the back-end of the controller after each use. Since I always check to see if trailer brakes/turn signals work, I cannot forget to plug in the wiring harness to the controller.
The wiring harness pigtail just lays on the transmission hump until needed again.
I had endured a dead battery for months until I got smart and re-read the installation and owners manuals.
Drove to Interstate and had them load-test that battery after I got straightened out, and the battery passes the load test.
