Something is wrong that you can't find distilled water... Every grocery store I've ever been in carried it. Try Walmart. It's important not only for your battery (very small amount used for that) but for your steam iron, plus for vaporizers and every type of inhalation therapy device.
Boiling water does not make it distilled.. You must collect the water vapor, have it condense and that is the distilled water.

Walmart, Walgreens and CVS pharmacies all carry distilled water.
I have also purchased it at some Dollar or .99 stores.

As others have said, just boiling water does not make it distilled. Even the Wisegeek website to which you gave the link says:

One way to remove these elements from water is to boil it until it changes to steam, a process known as distillation. When this steam is allowed to cool down and condense into liquid form again, the result is a purified form called distilled water.

Note the sentence I highlighed in bold...it is the *steam* that, once condensed, is distilled water. If you have some method of collecting and condensing the steam, then you could use that for your batteries. Anything other than distilled water should NOT be used in batteries.

We've never had any difficulty finding distilled water in grocery stores.

I use gallons of it in the darkroom (photography) and have always found it easily in grocery stores. I have used it after months of storage with no problem too. I use the very same water in the motor home batteries. However, I don't drink it, just moonshine!

Umm. Where are you looking in the mega marts? I almost always find in the same aisle as the spring water (drinking water), just at the end of the shelf. Now, this only applies to US supermarkets. NY, Maine, Indiana, Texas, California, and many points in between. OTOH, it was impossible to find in any Canadian supermarket (Sobeys, Atlantic, etc).

the stores by me generally don't put distilled water by the drinking water but rather near the laundry items.

I saw this subject for days and didn't click on it. Glad I did. I swear, I learn something everything I read these forums. I didn't know you were supposed to put distilled water in the batteries!! Let's hope I can find some around Denver!

I've never had a problem finding distilled water. Normally buy it at Wal-Mart. Right there with the spring waters. We buy it a gallon at a time and sometimes the large 2.5 gallon. Perhaps you were looking for the small personal water bottles (never looked, never saw it).

For our cats that we travel with and at home, we give them only distilled water. Nothing worse than a sick cat in the motorhome.

Wal-Mart is normally way cheaper. $0.89 per gallon versus $1.39 in grocery stores.

No problem in Canadian stores. Same place, with the large bottles of spring water. Sometimes if they are out of the cheap distilled, they will have expensive distilled water intended for babies. Same thing, but they charge twice as much for the pink lable and the word babies on it.

We used to drink distilled as well as the cats, but now we have installed an ultra fine filter under the counter and a carbon filter on the inlet for ourselves. For $0.89 per gallon, I'll continue to use distilled for our travel buds.
