We have experienced the same in our 29ft C diesel. Also on motorcycles we actually get better in the mountains... we gain more on the way down than we loose on the way up.

Two books: Mountain Directory East and Mountain Directory West. The best $30 we’ve ever spent. Well written, informative and will pay for themselves the first time you avoid a ‘problem’.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I used Flattest Route for years before it was taken off line due to increased Google map charges.

Flattest Route Finder appears to be be the same free shareware code.

For those that haven't used this app it doesn't search for the flattest route. Rather it displays the grades and elevations between 2 locations that you specify.

You can click on the graphic results and see the grade, elevation and map location.

I found this app to very useful for a new to me route. While Mountain Directory West/East is excellent and has different detail it also has less routes.

I still fail to see the benefit, if a flat route is longer!
Is this truly a fear thing?

Flattest route?......Nope... don't worry about a few hills/mountain grades.. up or down...
Bought a coach capable of going where I want , when I want, at the speed I want. with a shower big enough and providing endless hot water combined with extra large fresh/black & gray tanks for this fat boy..

Have played around with Flattest Route a little bit. Not necessarily looking for the flattest route but to get a quick glimpse at the elevation changes for my route. If the weather forecast calls for high temps maybe I'd time my route to hit the biggest elevation gains in the morning instead of afternoon thinking it would be a little easier on my class A gasser. I'm a newbie so take caution where I can.

Another one I ran across is TruckRouter which is geared towards truckers but has a lot of criteria that might be helpful to RVers. It shows elevation changes as well as allows you to put in vehicle height, length, weight, gas mileage, etc. Haven't read the User manual for Truck Router so don't know if it actually uses vehicle size/weight to avoid routes that won't work.

Hmmmm...
This works for cross country travels for sure.
Just keep in mind that it IS for trucks so one must put in the "bus" configuration, overall length including toad),width (9' 6") including mirrors),true height, number of axles, and gross combined weight. and possibly hazmat (gas/propane) for those tunnels that could restrict...

Also lists truckstops/fuel stops & truck parking.. with both map/terrain/satellite views.

Thanks for sharing that info. I will take a look at it.

Thanks for the post, OP! We missed flattest route when it was taken down.

We don’t avoid mountains, but we do like to know what elevation changes are on the way just as part of being prepared. Additionally, we have a sleep number bed and we deflate it before moving if we are going to have some significant elevation increases.

Can never have too many tools in the toolbox!

I didn't see this previously mentioned, In google maps switch to the bicycle profile and it will show an elevation graph. You may have to drag and drop the route back to the route you chose in Auto mode.
