Because these Dometic Refrigerator could be in a MH or 5w or TT I am put it here. The first recall was for 1997 thu 2003 but I think they have made this thu 2006 now. IMHO the recall is a BANDAID and does not fix the problem which is the FATIGUE CRACK IN THE BOILER TUBE. The recall is a shield to contain the FIRE. I think thes Refrig should last at least 15 or more years not 7 like mine or 4 like my son-in-law did.

Hi Sunny,
Both questions to the survey need to be answered to be able to vote. It is not possible to answer both questions, given the choices. Consider deleting this survey and try again; providing the ability of the responder to answer all the questions.

I can't vote for my 1992 Dutchmen 5er; that fridg never failed either.
The shield is to deflect any leakage from the boiler tube away from the heating element, not to deflect a fire. This shield effectively eliminates a fire. It does not however reduce the possibility of the boiler tube cracking. What were they thinking? Answer- cheap fix that satisfies the gvmt and pushes cooling unit replacement out past the warranty period.

If you have a Dometic Refrigerator I don't see why you can't vote. Have you seen one that has had the recall done on. All of the shields are around the Boiler which has the Boiler tube and the electric heating element and also the gas flame inside. You said "The shield is to deflect any leakage from the boiler tube away from the heating element, not to deflect a fire. This shield effectively eliminates a fire. It does not however reduce the possibility of the boiler tube cracking. What were they thinking?"

The leak in mine was just above the electric heating element and abour 4" from the gas flame there is no shield inside the round boiler.

Of the people I have talked to that has had a leak in the cooling unit they all have been on electric when it happen.

WE have (Registered Members: 30304) and only 6 have Dometic Refrigerator. Apparent most of Y'all are not as upset about these refrigerator as I am and Dometic will do nothing about it. When I call them about my son-in law refrigerator they said it is at least 6 month out of warranty tuff.

Sunny -

I just saw the post and responded to the survey! This problem is not one that will go away easily. Our refrigerator's cooling unit had to be replaced last year and it was only 3-4 years old. Just quit on us - no warning - just quit!

Side note: we had our rig in the shop for almost 3 weeks before they even looked at it. Then they were in such a rush to replace the cooling unit that they literally shoved it back into place ...tearing the insulation off the cabinet and that insulation was stuffed around the cooling unit! Of course we had no idea WHY it wasn't cooling properly until just recently!

We are now under the recall for the "bandaid" and have it on order w/ our repair guy. Hope to have it installed before heading to National Rally.

I would think with as many fires that have been started because of this PROBLEM that Dometic would come up with a plan to FIX it rather than issuing recalls for bandaids. But...that's the way it goes. To me, it speaks highly of their lack of concern for safety.

I suppose enough lawsuits hit deep enough in their pockets will cause them to rethink.

Just an opinion from an opinion-ated woman!
'nuff said!

Sandy

Tom,

I added a link to this poll over in the RV Systems and Appliances Forum, maybe you'll get additional exposure over there.

Hey Sunny

Of course Dometic is not going to redesign and replace your cooling unit well after the warranty has expired. If you want perpetual coverage, buy it! Sorry to sound so harsh, but Dometic has done what was required of them. I was amazed they spent this much money when so few owners had experienced problems; I guess it was the potential damage of a fire.
