Dometic RM2820 Works on 120 but not on propane

Hello all,

I have a Dometic RM2820 that works great on 120 but is intermittent on propane. The pilot flame is lit and it does cool sometimes but does not stay consistent. When we first purchased the used 92 bounder, we did smell ammonia, but that smell has since passed. We have removed the fridge with thoughts of purchasing an Amish cooling unit, but figures I would ash here prior to ordering. Any help or opinions are greatly appreciated.

Ryan

Can't work on 120V AC and have ammonia smell.......
Ammonia is major component of the fridge coolant...only smell it if cooling unit has a leak.

Are you sure the ammonia smell came for the fridge?
Do you see any signs of 'yellowish residue' around/in burner area?

Cooling unit leak...replacement time. No repairs/fixes...replace cooling unit, replace whole fridge or swap out to a residential/compressor type fridge

Amish cooling unit is good replacement

As usual, Old-Biscuit has nailed it.

However, you did say the fridge "works great" on AC so you apparently do not have a coolant leak, especially if you have removed the fridge and can inspect the burner area. That leaves the control board, circuits/ignitor, and gas burner orifice to check.

Your fridge may still be functional on both AC and gas, but at this stage, with the unit already removed and it being 26 years old, going with a new fridge may be a wise move.

First thing is check the recall list for your fridge. Also inspect the cooling unit for the yellowish buildup mentioned earlier.
Have you completed the maintenance on the chimney and burner? You could have carbon buildup on the burner/igniter giving you intermittent lighting of the burner.
Given you smelled ammonia earlier I would replace the cooling unit or whole fridge. The fridge is one leading cause of rv fires.

Most installations do not meet the specs for the fridge manufacturer so before reinstalling your current fridge or a new one make sure the enclosure is correct. The manufacturer should have manuals online for maintenance and installation. If not ask on here about them.
