I do it regularly and have never had an issue. Like you said "what could possibly go wrong?"

Some folks are comfortable working on electro mechanical devices. Some are not. If you don't feel competent to work on something like the steps then you should avoid it. I have no problem with it and it doesn't "scare" me one bit.
