Double Pane Windows

We have to replace glass in two fogged widows as etching is too severe to be cleaned. We have the option of using standard or tempered glass. Windows are in the dining and living area. Should we use standard or tempered glass? Opinions and similar experiences would be appreciated.....thank you.

Gee I never thought of that before, I do believe that the window glass is marked in a corner of each window, perhaps it would be a good idea to look at the other windows and see if they say what type glass they have. I think it is tempered but better check the marking in the corners for a DOT number.

There are basically a few options

Regular glass. if something hits it, is easy to shatter. Heat (extreme) wil do it as well

Tempered also shatters but you go to work at it, more heat resistant

herculite or Hercervite (as best I can recal the names) do not shatter, they honeycomb, Though I would not recommend it you are supposed to be able to walk barefoot on teh "Shattered" glass. I've seen it, it trulyu honeycombs on breaking.

And Automotive glass.. This is not supposed to "Shatter" ony used for windshields. it is two layers of glass with double faced adheasive sheet between them.

I'd go with Tempered or Herculite

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

I would replace them with whatever is in the other windows! Keep her between the ditches!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Thanks for the feedback. Because there is no OEM or after market replacement glass available I have to have the glass cut and then tempered at considerable cost . I think I will bite the bullet and use tempered.

Some kid shot a glass marble through a window on my slide out while stored. Shattered the glass into a million little pieces. Tempered glass. Double pane. I called Monaco and they said they still have the parts, well, I guess they call up the window mfg and he makes it from existing plans. Anyway, new window showed up at our auto body shop in a few (6) weeks and we drove the MH in for the replacement. Insurance (ours) covered all. Storage yard didn't lift a finger. Report filed w/ Police. Window cost est from Monaco was $3,000, I don't know what our ins paid.

Don't give up on your mfgs ability to have a new window made. And don't store your RV at our storage yard.

One of the local glass companies will cut the glass, then have it tempered at a pretty reasonable price. Not cheap, but not $3,000 either.

Ours was a slider, 30"x60", I had a local glass shop come out to look at it, he wouldn't touch it. I was glad I could get an exact replacement thru Monaco for a 12 year old coach.

Bill, do you have a 5' piece of glass that moves or is that the length of both the stationary and moving piece?
