Driving the I-5 Between San Diego and Los Angeles
Sorry for such a stupid question.
I live in San Diego and have never taken my RV north. Between San Diego and Orange Country is the San Clemente Border Check and CHP Inspection station - which is closed more often than it is open.
We have a 35' Class A motorhome.
Do we need to stop at the CHP inspection station? (We recently traveled from Tampa to San Diego and never stopped at any truck inspection stations) OR do we just stay in the right most Border Checkpoint lane knowing that the odds are slim/nil of being stopped. - We're not doing anything illegal, we just don't want to get in trouble for not stopping where/when we should have.

No need to stop at the CHP weigh station and I’ve seen (exceedingly rare) Homeland Security Border Customs agents stop all lanes of traffic and wave people through with the 1 in a thousand direction to proceed to secondary screening.
You won’t have any issues or delay at the inspection area, traffic on the other hand…

Thanks. Pretty much what I figured - I don't remember the last time I saw the border patrol out there checking vehicles - then again its been a while since we've driven north.

Lived in San Clemente 30 years. Transited this checkpoint countless times in a rv. If they want to have a closer look at your rig, they’ll ask you to pull over after you pass the checkpoint. I’ve never had them look inside my rv.

No need to stop/go thru ANY WEIGH Station(s).....you are not Commercial

But if you want to stop, would it be a cheap way to get your coach weighed ?

That isn’t quite true. Some states require RVs to pull into the weigh stations as well. Just pulled into a Maryland one a few months back. They don’t charge anything but if you pass it by they will.

Maryland MDOT FAQ's
Poster called the Maryland Department of Transportation and was told that the letter of the law stated that Recreational Vehicles are required to be weighed, but that the spirit of the law was for commercial vehicles only.
Furthermore, that the recreational vehicles portion was not enforced, so it was recommended to just pass by the weigh station without stopping.
If I am ever in Maryland I will do what I have always done ----PASS ON BY.

I never stop for what I understand they are not for RV's.

Don't know about your area, but here in the west just about any port of entry that is open will let you weigh and give you a weight slip. I wanted to know what my new pickup weighed empty so on the way home from picking it up I just pulled into the Port of Entry in Monticello, Ut. and they printed me a slip.

If Weigh Stations are Closed.....many leave the scales open and you can see what the weight is

I guess it depends on what the signs say. If the signs say RV’s are included, I reckon I’d stop. If if doesn’t, I’ll keep going.

I live in Orange County ( Huntington Beach) and travel down to the San Diego area often to camp. I've never been motioned into the customs checkpoint when coming home, and the as others said, you don't need to pull into commercial weigh stations. In fact in all the time I've traveled up and down the 5 from Orange County to Tijuana, I think I was motioned in once to the customs checkpoint, and they basically just waved and said have a nice day. In fact I love the drive from Orange County down to San Diego on 5, right along the coast, I always stop at the viewpoints. I often stay at the various San Diego County Parks. Very easy to get reservations and very nice parks.
