Dumping dish water in vault toilet at a State Forest campground

Hi,

Would be acceptable to dump say 3 gallons of dishwater a day in a vault toilet. Total would be 25-30 gallons over 8-9 days. Plan would be to use a bucket.

Thanks,

I don't see a problem with it just don't make a mess on or around the seat, but I'm not a ranger. Personally I'd ask, if the answer is no, live with it. Good luck.

It would just be adding grey water to the pit.....
No different then folks peeing/pooping in it

Increases liquid to solid ratio which is a good thing

If the forest service should happen to catch you, you will get a ticket. It costs them to have the vaults pumped and they don't take kindly to misuse.

I would think if everyone did this, they would become full very fast. Then unusable until Johnny Pumper come to empty it.
No human I know could put 30 gallons of waste in there in 10 days.

Thanks all for the replies. The campgrounds in question are unmanned so there is no one to ask. I will contact the appropriate ranger station and ask.

Wisconsin State Parks

Welcome to Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin state parks, it is required that campers dump gray water into vault toilets. Dumping wash water on the ground or at seep drains under fresh water supply faucets is forbidden.

Gray water holding tanks may be dumped at dump stations. If the campground does not have a dump station you may use one at any other state park for no charge.

Everything from wash basins to portapotties may be dumped into vault toilets. So buckets of gray water are permitted. I have used 4 gallon plastic jugs. I have asked rangers. They all agree, dump in vault toilets.

There is no published prohibition of dumping gray tanks into vault toilets that I have seen. For most TT's it will be difficult or impossible to get gravity flow from TT to vault toilet. Macerator rigs may work.

I wish you good luck and happy trails ahead!

Thanks Persistent that's good to know.
Here in Michigan its 10$ to use a dump station in a state park if not a guest. I do have facilities to dump at home.

If I were you, I would ask a park ranger before taking his advice since that is not true in most state parks. We have been campground hosts in 5 states(not WI) and none of them permitted it.

Hi Kirk,

Have you hosted in MI? If I was stuck I could just put the wash up water down the rv toilet.

Man we are living in an uptight world lately. If you are camping in wilderness, do nature a favor. Walk your bucket of water out about 20 yds from the nearest camping spot, and dump it on a nice tree or bush.

State forest campground is not wilderness - it's a place used over and over again by people on a regular basis.

Many state forest campgrounds have rules prohibiting dumping gray water anywhere but in approved places. While some may have relatively clean gray water, others will not.

There was just a lengthy thread on dumping gray water. That's not really the question here - the question is about dumping in a vault toilet.
