You see them frequently in Quartzsite. You want to batten everything down at that point. I got one directly this past February - never did find all my buckets, and had to get the awning fabric repaired. Didn't get to it in time.

Common in hot climes, over land as dust devils and over waters as water devils...definitely different than true tornadoes or waterspouts associated with large clouds.

Flew though or around many in the Caribbean and Gulf in helos when mission demands made avoiding them difficult. Definitely turbulent to a degree but never the danger of a waterspout (tornadic force).

See lots of both as little ones that are hardly anything... once they raise your eyebrows, time to let them pass rather than dare their strength.

I caught this one on video, but couldn’t figure out how to post anything but a screenshot. It lasted longer than most I’ve seen, and went very high.

When I see the sky turn brown I get the sails down or the MH off the road.

We were drivng between Kingman and Las Vegas. The wind was bad but every time I saw dirt blowing is was from a truck on a dirt road. A dust devil suddenly formed to our left. the road is two lanes and full size shoulders. All I could do is keep the steering wheel from being ripped from my hand while going from one side to the other.

Had to fix the slide.

I have never driven a MH into a ditch at 65 mph and at the place in the road it would have been ungly.

Fortunately for us we have never seen a dust devil there although it does seem like perfect territory for them.
