Preparation is all.
Some parks were booked 2 years ago.
If you find a viewing spot, good for you!

Our group (RV Mutants) started planning for the Eclipse in April of 2016. As I was traveling from Arizona to Seattle I stopped at about 6 Oregon parks inside the totality zone. We wanted a place without high temperatures that was reasonably priced.

I found a wonderful little campground on the banks of the Santiam River in Idanha, OR. It has FHU for $30/day, $180/week. We plan to be there from 8/17-8/23, some of us longer. There are also 3 astronomers that booked it even before we did, so we'll get a little expert advice. It's this campground --

River Mountain RV Park | Idanha, detroit lake, sisters, river mt rv

The news media is reporting that Oregon will have an influx of approximently 1 million people all wanting to get a great viewing spot. That is likely to cause gridlock and shortages of all consumables starting days ahead of the 21st.

My advice is plan to be in the viewing area days ahead of Monday, the 21st and stock up before you leave.

All this for an event that is going to last about 2 minutes.

And it might be cloudy or rain!
An excuse for a gathering is just that. A chance to see a historic event is special to me!
Will you be watching?

All this, I live on the path in a small town in Oregon... I've already bought the extra gas water and ammo for said event. Local emergency providers have indicated that they believe they will be very unlikely to provide any meaningful services.

Hopefully, I will be doing something more enjoyable and who knows if the weather is even going to be good. Seems like people are spending a bunch of money for something that lasts 2 minutes. Not my money though so I hope you all have a great time.

The entire eclipse lasts about 2.5 hours. There may be only 2 minutes that the moon is completely blocking out the sun. It depends on your location. There is an interactive map on this site that will let you figure out the exact time where you are.

I remember watching a partial eclipse with my then 4 year old daughter. More important is that she remembers it. That was in 1971 and we were in Kansas. She will be joining me and 40 of my RV friends in Oregon next month.

For me this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm really hoping the weather cooperates. At least it's not during the rainy season.

It will be 90% here. That's close enough that we won't be traveling anywhere to see it!

Barb, thanks for capturing the moment, and the feeling we get from "being there"!
We will "Be There" while others cast off the glorious moments as trivial.
It's all about the wonderful science/history that can be witnessed, absorbed, and shared with our friends; passed down to our decendents.
Others may prefer easier, more succulent, immediate satisfaction, while we find a calm honor by personally witnessing the obvious and precious.

We just "bought in" for a space (dry RV camping in the Madras Oregon area.
They have cut a deal with the local farmers if they run out of RV parking spaces.
Kinda spendy but then again is a once in a lifetime thingy.
block of 5 days for $300.
All tent and full service hook up spots sold out 2 months ago it seems.

We are camping at a COE park on Lake Percy Priest in Tennessee in the path or totality.
Every campground we called had been booked solid for at least a year. We got THE LAST spot at this COE park.

We are very excited and hoping for beautiful clear weather!! Our spot is right across the road from the beach area in the campground so we will have a clear view of the sky.

Whoa!"FULL UP" & no more spots available...(Did not see this coming!)
HOWEVER>>>>
If you call them, they have a few options available for campers @ other places near with shuttles running.

I wouldn't be dragging my feet on ordering however...
