Thanks for the info, everyone.
We are paying extra for the electric at the campground, so while my wife is out of town, I'm leaving the electric off during the day while I'm at work. I'm sure when she gets back we'll just leave the electric on and add the LP just before showers.
I did intentionally take a long shower last night using both electric/LP to heat, but I didn't really notice much difference. That being said, I can take a 15 min shower of constant water and not run out of hot water. Good enough for me.

In 18 years the trailer's electric heater is ON 100% of the time when plugged into shore power regardless of what electric appliance are operated.

Like others, we leave electric water heater on all the time when hooked up. We have never actually used propane for the water heater. Probably should just to make sure it works.

Leave electric on all the time. If multiple people are going to shower in a row, we'll turn on gas before showering starts.

I had to replace the relay in our WH, then noticed that when water is getting up to temperature, the relay contacts are “fluttering”, off and on many times per second. I can hear it happening. No relay is going to last long like that. So now we only turn on the water heater as we need it. It stays hot enough for a few hours. Or if boondocking, just use the propane side unless generator is running.

water heater
Water heater is on propane only.
Got better things to do than go outside, open heater cover and flip switch on and off on the water heater.
from camper FAQS
But, all in all, RV water heaters use very little propane, which is why many campers leave their hot water heater on all the time.

Ahh, we have switches for both mounted on the bathroom sink counter, so turning either on/off is easy as can be.

I would not want to do that either. But it has been a longggg time since I've seen an RV that required a person to have to do this. For certain, running wires and installing a switch inside would be one of the first modifications I would make if a rig of mine came from the factory that way.
There are variables but for our usage, I have no doubt that turning it off/on once or twice a day would save us quite a bit (money and the trips for refills) versus leaving it on continuously.

Bottom line is, I'm a cheapskate! Might not save a ton but it definitely gives us more time between expensive propane refills.

We are full-time and run the water heater on electric full-time and have no issues with recovery time on showers.

I leave my electricity on all the time. Saves on propane and still provides enough hot water.
