Essentials List

Being new to Class A DP RVing I was wondering if anyone has a list of essentials that one should always have on board. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Albert & Sue! Your question covers a lot of territory!

1. Good water pressure regulator, either an adjustable or a high-flow fixed pressure like the Fairview.

2. High-quality AC protection device such as the Progressive Industries EMS series that protects you against all kinds of AC problems, not just surges.

3. Two water hoses, one of freshwater into the coach and one for utility use. I recommend the Zero-G. They collapse flat and can be rolled onto one of the plastic reels made for extension cords.

4. Basic tool kit.

5. Stepladder. I just carry a 4' stepladder. If I need something higher I can always find another camper willing to lend me one, or I can get one from the campground maintenance crew!

6. Inline water filter for the freshwater hose, such as the Camco blue filters. If you will be drinking the water I would also install a high-quality carbon-block filter under the sink with separate faucet, one that will remove lead and cysts down to 1/2 micron.

7. Sewer hose support. Some campgrounds require them.

These are just a few things to get you started. I'm sure others will have many more to add.

If you go to the top of page and enter ‘things to have on an RV’ you will get several threads that have lists people have made.

A notepad & a sharp pencil to write down the things you need as you find that you need them.

For the first few trips a Walmart & a Lowes no more than 15 minutes away.

Whatever you need, don't buy cheap. Buying cheap only means that the item will break soon & you will need to buy what you should have bought in the first place.

I'd second the good quality water regulator, the good quality basic tool kit, and surge suppressor.



At least one good quality fire extinguisher, preferably two or more placed for easy access inside and out. Don't forget to check them from time to time, take them out and shake them to prevent settling, and replace as they expire.



Also don't forget to check expiration dates on smoke and gas alarms. I believe most LP alarms have about a 5 year life expectancy. Smoke detectors vary in life expectancy, but should have a replacement date somewhere on them.



Warning triangles or cones.



Spare tire, checked for pressure and condition. Roadside assistance card and/or tools to change a tire yourself.

A baseball cap. I never, never, ever wear a hat or cap EXCEPT, when driving a motor home. The sun visors in most motor homes are too high and and do not block the sun. You can adjust the baseball cap to protect from the sun. You may look like a goober with the cap sitting sideways on your head, but you will be able to see.
Also a led lantern. Flashlights are ok but a lantern you can sit on the ground gives much better light for after dark setups and outside dining after dark. The new led lanterns give off more light than the Coleman lanterns and or on with the flick of a switch.
