Texas and South Dakota are 2 of the most popular states for full-timers. Neither has income tax and both make it relatively easy to establish residency. The Escapees RV Club has an excellent on-line booklet called "How to Become a Real Texan." You will need Acrobat Reader to view the booklet.

Although there are other mail forwarding services in South Dakota, we are most familiar with Alternative Resources, and they have some good info on their web site on how to become a resident of SD. You'll need to check out their links, but basically all you need to do is change over your vehicle registrations (can be done by mail) and show up to get a vision test and photo for your new driver's license. You use Alternative Resources as your address for your license and registration and the address of where you are staying while getting your license as your address for voter registration.

If you decide on SD, be sure you check with your mail forwarding service (Paul, in the case of Alternative Resources) for the names of RV parks in the area that will work with you on voter's registration (you must leave them a SASE so they can send you the voter's registration card).
