CLICK THE LINK...GO TO Driver Licenses ... emergency contact INFORMATION, FILL IN BLANKS.
You can now go online and enter two (2) emergency contacts on your Florida
Drivers License (electronically) which can only be retrieved by a police
officer. This came about as a result of one woman's teenage daughter being
killed in a car accident and taking over 5 hours to locate the mother to
inform her. This way, if you are in an accident, the police can run the
drivers license and have the emergency info ASAP!!!

This also applies to us Snowbirds that have Florida Identification cards issued in Florida.
Great idea and I hope that ALL states follow this procedure.

Ron, being this is my first long term stay in FL, I am concerned about your comment.
I am a WI resident, with a valid WI CDL etc. Why would I need a FL ID card or DL? I see on the FL website, that I can receive a "Florida Only" DL and retain my current out of state CDL?
I don't understand, if I have a valid DL, why would I need one for FL? Is my understanding that all 50 states have DL reciporcity incorrect?

John,
I think he means if you have a Florida license or ID you can, if you wish, have 2 emergency names added to their database.
And he hopes that all states provide the ability to designate emergency contacts for their respective licenses.

John, Florida ID cards are issued so you can cash checks in Fla. (at least thats the stated reason for having them) If you're a Disney lover as we are They also take them to vertify that you are a Fla. resident so you can get Disney Tickets at reduced rates. We buy yearly passes each year at a price comparable to what you'd normally pay for a short stay ie 4 or 5 day park hopper pass.

John,
We stay in Florida 4 to 6 months a year, we use the Florida ID because we also have a checking account at a Florida bank that we use when there. The Florida ID makes it much easier to use our checks to pay for purchases for merchants and to cash checks.
The other reason as stated above is that the parks, Disney and Sea World allow us to use them to get the Florida resident prices for our tickets. We usually buy two year passes for Sea World.
We have Ohio drivers license, the Florida ID doesn't have anything to do with driving, it's use is for ID purposes only.
You are correct that all 50 states have DL reciporcity. You do not need to have a Florida DL, as a matter of fact, I believe it is illegal to have a valid DL in more than one state at a time. I could be wrong, but that is what I was told by a BMV clerk.
Ron

I had a Florida home up until about a year and a half ago. Florida is different from many states in that you can get a Florida only license and hold it at the same time as your primary license. In fact, a Florida license (primary or Florida only) is required if you register a vehicle in Florida.
My understanding is that if you are stopped while driving a Florida registered vehicle that is registered to you, you will incur a fine if you do not have one of the versions of the Florida driver's license.
I believe that they do this because so many seasonal residents register their cars in Florida. After all, it only costs $35 or so per year regardless of the value of the vehicle or motorhome. In other words, there is no excise tax.
