A bit over a month ago I stopped in a rest area in Georgia (As I recall) and noticed they had a RV dump station there... Locked and closed.. I asked why (AH, it was in Georgia.. Lavonia if I've spelled it right)
They said that Lavonia had had to install not one but two new sewage grinders cause of people (I wanted to say jerks but they said people) putting solid objects down the dump (Things like rocks or bolts or such) and breaking the grinders and thus they had to stop letting people dump.
(What can I say)
Now.. I have heard many people tell me of meetings that never occurred and or things that were never discussed at a meeting that did happen. In a couple of cases I have attended a meeting and later listened to an explanation of what was discussed there.
IN at least one case I had a recording of what was said there
Yet the report.. was different.
So,, was that manager passing gas or selling gasoline? I don't know.
But it might be worth an E-mail to "J" saying
I heard you folks are now charging for RVers to use your dump stations? Is this the case or is it just a few stations.. Like the one in _______ (the op's post)

The J offers many services. The dump station being one of them. To stay in business profit needs to be made. The J is not the United Way. Those needing the service need to determine if there is value for the price paid. It's called free enterprise. Too many times I see those owning RVs taking advantage of the J. Pulling in at 3 PM, and setting up for the evening (one or more slides out), with coach & toad hanging out in the driveways making it dangerous for everyone else is an example. This example is ubiquitous across J's. Dumping at the J and taking the extra time to clean out one's tanks while others wait in line for fuel is another example of poor judgment by too many people owning RVs. Notice the reference is to those owning RVs. This is the lowest class of people I could make reference to and not have the moderators yank the post. These people are not RVers.
When asked (in the most kind and politically correct choice of words and tone of voice) about their actions, every time the question is met with a reply just short of physical violence. Like Dmiles posted, some people think they deserve to be treated better than everyone else. Somehow they alone are special.
Times change and one needs to change with the times. If one does not like how business is conducted, then one is free to go elsewhere. For me, I hope these people do go somewhere else.

There are free areas to dump besides Flying J, and there are sites that charge more than $5, and there are sites that are restricted for guests:
Here are a few RV Dump Sites
Or here: Dump Stations
So, drive "x" number of miles out of your way, possibly, or save the fuel and spend $5. It is not an unreasonable fee. Since I always use my local city dump station for free, or a CG at 25-40 bucks a night.

I don't blame FJ for charging what I consider a reasonable fee. I'm not an FJ fan and avoid them if I can; always too congested for my liking. Never have overnighted at one, but would if necessary and I would give them some business, too, for the privilege of free camping

Totally lost in all the above, is the FACT that Flying J was quite recently bought out and taken over by Pilot - and I, for one, suggested that we would soon be seeing and erosion of services and attractions we all have enjoyed from Flying J in the past - as the new management slowly DEgrades services to Pilot's level - NOT raise Pilot's quality up to Flying J, as some of the Pollyanna types were suggesting.
We've all now seen the first shoe drop - there WILL be more to follow - count on it!
But hey - if SOME folks here think THEY would like in on the "pay $5 to dump", but don't yet HAVE that feature anywhere on your travel route - just send that $5 to ME instead - then YOU will feel satisfied and rewarded by the warm and fuzzy feeling you are "doing something reasonable" - and *I* will enjoy your $5...

Ok. As long as I can park my rig in your lot, come into your house to get my lottery ticket, souvenir painting on velvet, browse thru your trucker's items aisle & pick up my big bag of Cheetos, supersize drink & can of Skoal.

There is a reason "FJ" sold out to Pilot. Giving things away doesn't feed the Bulldog. We live in a capitalistic society and they can charge what they want for products and services. If you think it's too much, spend your money elsewhere, that's how it works. You can't eliminate costs to providers, so you can't expect to have them eliminate fees just because you ask them too. Thank God we still have choices, all we have to do is make them for ourselves.

Dumping was never "free".
It's cost was part of the overhead and the price of other products covered it.

AH - so you're saying that now that FJ/Pilot is CHARGING to dump - they'll undoubtedly be REDUCING the price of other goods and services, because of the money they will save....

Flying J is quickly becoming a Pilot clone. I used to always find the best diesel prices at any Flying J but in the last 8 months, I've seen that quickly change. Many Flying J's are now charging more than their competetion.
One example is the Flying J at Rock Hill, SC, it is charging .10 p/gal more than their competetion just across the street....an Exxon station, can you believe that Exxon is beating out Flying J???
I'll miss always looking for the Flying J because I always knew they had the best prices in whatever area I was in.
