We have owned 3 GPS over time and they are great, but before we go anywhere we get the atlas out and check the route and roads. Sometimes the GPS sends you the wrong way adding miles to the trip. Remember the information in the GPS can be 4-5 years old and new roads have been built.
Bottom line is you still need a good current map.
