Frozen Pad Locks.

On our storage building for our Motorhome has high-security round padlock on the door every winter it freezes. I have used WD40, Lock De-Ice, Grafite Lub, cigarette lighter and etc. What those solutions have in common are you have held the lock keyhole up to get whatever you are using down into the lock then tap the lock to unlock. The lock would get gummed up with the junk you put the lock and would soaked and cleanup at least once a year. So for those cold days with the wind blowing 20 mph and the wind chill below zero, I come to a solution that works for me. I bought a bunch hand warmers off clearance table and took an old wool sock. I jump out of my warm jeep put the handwarmer on the lock and slide soak over the lock to keep the hand warmer in place and jump back into the Jeep and listen to my favorite tunes and in a few minutes while the hand warmer warms up the lock. Works for me!

Those work great but we are in a rented storage area and I already got caught on camera using my small handheld propane torch and was told no open flames. The owner handed me a can of window de-icer to use.

Could you wrap some Hot Hands around it and go get coffee?

I have a padlock on my storage shed which used to freeze in the winter. I cut a piece of rubber out of an old inner tube, placed it above the lock and hasp and nailed it into place with short roofing nails. This keeps water from running onto the lock and freezing up. You can only nail the piece on one door otherwise you can't open the doors. I folded the top of the rubber piece over a thin piece of wood trim to hold the top rigid. You could use a 1/2" piece of thin aluminum if you had some. Glue the top of the rubber to the strip to hold it in place.
A drop or two of light oil in the lock helps too.

What is a 'high-security' round padlock? Everyone I have seen can be drilled easily with a cordless drill bit the same diameter as the lock insert.

That is what the storage facility requires you have since they have contents insurance up to 10,000 on your contents. They say it required by the insurance company. I realize locks only keep honest people honest. The wall of this storage is one layer one thin layer of tin that could cut with tin snips.

Ok, only reason I bring it up is I once thought I had 'security' and that turned out to be a joke. Probably with MHs around, have some other video security to go along with the lock. If they can get to the hasp with a boltcutter, gone in a moment...Never had a lock in a spot where it could get wet and freeze.

A few years ago a friend had his stored at storage facility inside with a roll down garage door just big enough for his 5er. Someone broke in and shut the door and spend the next couple hours prying his entrance doors and his basement doors open to stealing anything of value. They did more damage to the 5er prying the doors open than what the stole they was worth. Now I leave all my basement doors unlocked and the door unlocked. Mine is locked in garage type storage area that I only have access to.

the lock probably gets condensation on and in it. When you get a chance take some paraffin and dissolve it in mineral spirits or diesel. Wipe the hasp down, dribble a little inside, and put some on the key before running it in and out a few times. The diesel will evaporate and leave a fine film of paraffin on the parts, which will stay lubed for a long time.

Or move here to California.
