Good old yankee-er, American ingenuity is alive and well. I'll try to remember that until I can do mine tomorrow. Replacements are about 20 bucks now. Thanks!

Electrical supply stores have both the ties and glue-on blocks. Notice he used black, white does not hold up in sunlight.

That's a pretty good idea, I'll have to do this so I don't leave mine on the pump.

Why not attach it to the black plastic area around the gas cap. That's how mine came from the factory. Just drill a small hole about 1/2" away from where the cap screws in. Run a tie through the hole and attach something to it on the back side so it won't pull out.
Some of the f-53 gas caps are not covered with a locking cover. I just bought a Stant locking gas cap but now I have to rework the attaching strap so I don't leave the darn thing.

When you put them on use a drop of super glue. And the are must be cleaned with alcohol. I have use these things a lot in aviation and that drop of super glue does last a long time.

This thread made me smile. After the second time of replacing the engine oil filler cap on our last gasser, I installed a lanyard on that sucker with a fishing leader that made it 'dangle' in my face so I didn't forget. Those caps were hard to come by...

I made a lanyard out of 1/16 stainless cable and two crimp on eyelet (round hole) of an appropriate size. Put a short large head screw into the center of the top of the gas cap. Leave the screw just a little loose so the cap can rotate under the cable. Used another screw to attach it inside the gas cap compartment. All materials are available at Home Depot/Lowes/Menards or a good hardware store.

If the crimp doesn't hold or isn't secure enough, you can remove the insulating collar and solder the cable to the eyelet
