Angry Goodsam Failed to Provide Plastic Membership Cards

I purchased an elite Goodsam membership on October 14, 2022. Beginning November 2 through December 23, 2022 I had numerous telephone and email communications with Goodsam representatives regarding failure to receive plastic membership cards. These included several with the office of Marcus. Each time except the last I was told that my cards were in the mail, but it might take 2 to 4 weeks for me to receive them. The last time I was told that I should receive them in a week or two. One response indicated that because of environmental concerns they only issued plastic cards in response to special requests. During the last conversation I asserted that I didn't believe they issue plastic cards. The representative assured me that they do and that I would receive mine in a week or two. I told him that if I failed to receive them I would be stating the problem on this forum.

My intention was to use my membership for discounts on fuel, propane, and dump fees at Flying J Travel Centers. They have membership card readers at virtually all the travel centers currently and ask you for your membership card to receive your discount. During my recent 2600 mile road trip I was unable to receive any of these discounts because I didn't have a card. I feel that my membership is virtually worthless and that I should be refunded my membership fee. However, none of the representatives was willing to discuss any compensation for their non-performance.

Am I the only member who has had this problem with Goodsam?

Most of those card readers have a way to enter an 'alternate' rewards card NUMBER. See if you can get at least that number, or when you signed up you may have been asked to create a PIN. That maybe your member number + the pin would work just using the keypad.

I was often disgusted with GS club when I was a member and dropped them years ago, so I'm not sure my suggestion will work, and back 18 years ago, I did get cards within the 4 weeks. I let that card expire a couple years later, then 5 years later signed up inadvertently with a RV park that gave me a temporary card, then later I got the plastic card.

So, back 6 years ago, they were still mailing the cards out. My old number took the form of XXXXXXXXX and it expired in 2021.

With GS, I doubt they've changed but I found they only had like a $0.03/gal discount for fuel so it wasn't worth the bother with a 90 gallon tank. Then I found that nearly universally, the RV parks that offered a GS discount, had regular prices that were higher by nearly exactly what the discount was. So basically, I could go across the street to a non-GS park and find the daily rate lower then the GS park. Made paying for the GS card a waste of money and time for the most part.

And then, the really annoying part of the GS program was the tons of snail mail they sent me month after month. I tried asking them to stop several times with no response. Finally, I took to gathering that mail, writing NO in the sign up area where my name was so they'd know it was me, stuffing it all back in one of the pre-paid envelopes they'd sent, and mailing it back to them. They don't like paying a premium for heavy mail with no income so a few months later their junk mail had slowed then it finally stopped. Took almost a year of me doing that, once or twice a month.

But, try finding your club membership number and try entering that using the keypads in those pumps that ask for a rewards card.

You signed up for three years, $79? Website says fees non-refundable. Hopefully you'll get a plastic card before your three years is up! Be sure you aren't set up for auto-renew....

I know that most things are now electronically available, but I'm old school and like something tangible I can hold in my hand. Good Sam, KOA, Coach Net....they're all doing it. They won't provide a plastic card, but occasionally will have a paper cutout on the mailer. What gets me......Good Sam spends millions in junk mailings yet can't provide a plastic card.

I know there are bigger issues in the world, but often it's little things like these that aggravate people and make them take their business elsewhere.

I don't recall how but we just used a paper one .... from the website or in mail? ..... but then we just put it in a laminating pouch which you can get at WalMart. We dropped Good Sam many years ago.

Well it's pretty well established that waiting won't get results. I am interested in other responses in which the members asked for plastic cards. My impression was that their representatives were trained to blow me off.

I am not set up for auto renew. I have been a member most of the time for about 25 years. I had old cards which would have worked if I hadn't upgraded my membership level to elite. However they changed my membership number.

This may not be of interest to you but I'll throw it out there just in case. Pilot/Flying J has partnered with Good Sam to offer an
RV Plus Charge Card with the discount levels as shown on the attached. This is definitely a plastic card that you swipe at the pump. There is no need to also swipe a Good Sam card as your discount level is already incorporated in the RV Plus card. It looks like you have a gas coach so as an Elite member your discount would be 7¢ per gallon.

I have a diesel coach and prior to using the TSD/Open Roads program I occasionally used the RV Plus card without problem.

As I'm sure you're aware PFJ does not have the least expensive fuel, but the locations are convenient and usually with room to maneuver.

OMG, this. I will never use that stupid perforated cardboard card. They send those out to non-members or former members as if that's gonna entice us to sign up? Oh, they gave me a card, I guess I have to sign up now!

It does seem that Pilot often has the best prices on fuel near where I live (Oregon), though that's mostly on the interstates. Seems they are few and far between away from I-5 here. On the other hand, the one nearest to me (60+ miles down the road, Highway 97) in Chemult is more expensive than Fred Meyer in Bend, usually.

it's been my experience that anything to do with Good sam especially the credit cards are a nightmare. No offense to anyone but so few of the customer support members on the phone speak very clear english and seem to have a poor comprehension of why I am calling

We have a GS card, but I have used the telephone number associated with the membership as the alternate number. Even going into Camping World, we do not take the card in, just give them the phone number.
