The folks in Texas and Florida call those giant roaches Palmetto Bugw, but you and I know they're nothing but giant flying cockroaches. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

We generally leave the gray tank open. But I do put an trap in the hose to prevent sewer gas, drain flies, etc from coming up the hose.

We leave the gray tank open until the black tank is about 3/4 full. Then we close the gray tank and take a couple of showers before dumping the black and using the gray to flush the hose!

I leave the gray tank valve open, form a P trap with the sewer hose and have a foam plug to seal up the hole where the sewer hose exits the wet bay.
As far as I can tell, that takes care of all the issues listed in this thread for leaving it closed. I don't have to monitor the gray tank level or run out and dump the gray tank when I'm half way thru a shower.
Someone said they had a problem with somebody removing their sewer hose from the park plumbing and someone else commented they are trying to protect the hose from the sun.
Some parks must really be full of vandals if they're going around disconnecting sewer hoses. I guess I've managed to avoid those parks for the last 20 years. My current sewer hose is about 8 years old and so far the sun has not impacted it any. I am due for a new one but it's because of the inside and not the outside.

Sorry, I meant primarily from the landscapers accidentally jarring it loose.

We hook up the hose but always keep them closed till they need to be dumped. I have a Sanicon pump and after dumping the black tank, I shut off the Sanicon. While keeping the blk tank valve open I then open the grey tank valve to backflush the grey into the black tank. I can actually hear the grey tank fluid rushing into the blk tank. Then, I close the grey tank valve, empty the blk again. When the blk is drained, close it and open the grey to pump out what's remaining in the grey.
This helps in keeping the blk tank clean.

I don't even hookup sewer hose until time to dump.
Then dump/rinse/stow until next time
Why?
Only need to be involved with dumping one time
Sewer hose isn't laying out exposed to birds pecking at it, weed whackers, pranksters and neighbor doesn't have to be looking at my sewer hose in their front yard.

Looks like I'm in the minority! Ever since we bought our first trailer (2001?), I leave the gray tank valve open aside from closing it to accumulate some rinse water for dumping the black tank hose. I've never had a problem with critters other than mice at times, and I don't think they've come up the gray water hose.

You aren't the only one. My answer is it depends.
Previous MH both always closed until dumping as I needed gray to rinse black.
Current MH has washer and black tank flush.
I dont run the hose unless we will be in a location for an extended time and/or DW wants to do several loads of wash. Im not always around when she decides to wash so I hook up and leave gray open. I may close it before time to dump black but usually don't plan that well and just use the black tank flush for 1-2 rinses (or until it looks fairly clean/clear) after dumping.

I leave my valves closed and hose disconnect until I am ready to drain. I do this because I had to replace too many hoses due to damages from lawn mowers and weed whackers! However, the main reason is because of ME! I step and squish the darn things anytime I'm working on the coach in that given area!

A lot of spiders come up through the sewer. For me, stays closed until ready to dump.

I hook up while setting up because it's easier when the slides are closed. I also put on a fire hose type material (2" diameter made by Protech) over the 1.5" Sanicon hose to protect it from the weed wackers, sun, etc.

We are so used to not having hookups that i never even get the dump hose out till it is time to dump, just my routine, i guess, also keeps it protected, no smells from open sewer line, i don't have to look at it, (neither does my neighbor) etc. On the times we are at a FHU place, we will take full showers, but will watch the level and dump when appropriate.

Keep valves closed until tanks fill to 2/3 then pull the valve and dump them. Keeping valves closed prevents insects from traveling up the hose into your tanks.
