Hack for returning to hitch height
I'm trying to come up with an easy way to return my 5th wheel height to the hitch. I know there are leveling systems that keep it in memory, but I'm sure someone here has come up with an easy system. One thought was to mark the leveling legs with a grease pencil when disconnecting.
If I'm at any kind of angle, I have to raise the tailgate before backing up close to the hitch, which makes it difficult to just watch the hitch.

On my toy hauler I used a piece of lightweight chain with a weight on the end. Cut to the length I needed. I used a magnet on the top of it and stick it to the tongue. Cheap and easy.

Get a roll of masking tape and put it on each leg where you want to stop to un-hook.
Then lower or raise to the same spot to hook up. Take the tape off, and put new pieces where you need it next time.

I take a tape measure reading at the bottom of the front cap and use that for a reference. Works well. + or - 1/4" is insignificant.
My landing legs are too obscured to see them well.
I also added a notched tailgate to the truck so I don't have to mess with the tailgate at all.

I've done a similar process to the chain. Used a piece of weighted string tied to a spring clip. Since a sloping approach of the truck vs the 5th can make a difference from time to time I would adjust the string as needed when unhitching.
I've also used a magnetic pointer I could adjust along the side of leveling float.
I like the chain idea better than my string method.

Every unit is different. Assuming it is on level ground, a big assumption, my trick is my nose.
The switches for the legs are right under the overhang & below a marker light. When my nose can touch the marker light dead center the pinbox is just the right height for the 5th wheel & clears the notched tailgate comfortably.

What is a 'hack' and why does a 'tip'/idea become a hack?
Side Note:
What is a 'hashtag'...... when it is just a 'pound sign'?
Sheesh....

On my 2000 Excel, it had a small level on a small plate that had 1 screw mounting it near the leg switches.
Before you unhooked, you just swiveled it to "level", unhooked and leveled your camper.
This would make that small level "unlevel".
When you were ready to rehook, just return it to "level" by raising or lowering the legs.
This would put the pin very close to hookup position with very little readjustment.
I hope this made sense.
