Highway axle weight limits

Driving my 36' diesel pusher in North Carolina I am noticing many of the back country roads (included the road past my home) are posted with max axle weight limits of 6 1/2 tons. Last I checked 6 1/2 tons is 13,000 pounds. My relatively small motorhome has a rear axle weight rating of 17,000 pounds and as normally loaded the rear axle comes in at about 14,000.

Truck traffic in the area does not seem to be concerned by the weight limit and I have ignored it. What do you do when you encounter this situation?

I’d be concerned if I was going over a bridge. Otherwise it’s probably not a big deal until you get pinched by a DOT cop

Probably a decision of the local roads department engineer, road base and surface not designed for a heavy traffic but OK for the occasional local delivery. Yes I would be concerned if there was a small bridge or the culvert involved.
You are not a commercial motor vehicle but wait will apply if the road surface cannot hold up.

Good point....some of these roads have limits, but okay to local deliveries. They just don't want it to be a thoroughfare for truck traffic.

I'm confused, you titled your thread Highway axle weight limits, but talk about back-county roads, unless you mean county highways which is the subject?

I've never seen a county road posted with axle limits, only gross weight limits.
