Horizontal DOT LP Tank

Got a friend that just bought a used Northstar Truck Camper. It is equipped with a Manchester Horizontal DOT LP Tank. we were talking about where to get it filled.

Is there anything special as far as filling procedure being a horizontal tank (i.e Flying J, Costco etc), or should it be filled at a Gas supplier that fills horizontal ASME Tanks?
The tank has aged out so re-certification or replacement will be necessary.
Thanks All!

DOT tanks don't age out and all MH use them so filling at most places you can get close enough to, can fill them.

UHaul, Flying J, hardware stores within tanks.....

Have one of those tanks under our rig. NEVER a problem. Tractor Supply is another suggestion.

Motorhomes use ASME tanks, not DOT tanks. I suspect that a horizontal DOT tank could be filled wherever an ASME tank can be filled, but it would be a good idea a call around first. As for re-certifying a horizontal DOT tank, most likely any place that re-certifies "normal" DOT tanks will do it...

LP Cylinders (DOT Jurisdiction) must be recertified 10 yrs after date of MFG stamped on collar --- vertical and horizontal cylinders

Horizontal cylinder removable so many places will NOT refill if still on/in RV

How do you find a location that certifies RV LP tanks? What keywords when Googling?

A full service propane dealer.

Mine locally charges $15 to recert.

Your Motorhome has a LP Tank (ASME Jurisdiction)
Does NOT have to be recertified or inspected

DOT Cylinders do

DOT Cylinders do
My LP tank in the RV does not need to be recertified but my 11 lb. tank does.
I purchased from a propane dealer in Quartzsite. Judging from the price I paid I thought it was new but a year later I was told it had expired. My mistake, I should have checked the manufacturer date! I will from now on. Hope this helps others buying what they think is a new tank.

Thanks for the replies. Tank is in good shape, so he probably will do the
re-certification.
The tank valve that is used is the same as a vertical tank. It points to the left (not straight out) so I don't think that the
dispensing handle will fit inside the compartment that the tank is in.
Might be easier to just remove the tank to fill.

Getting a tank re-certified is no big deal. There are propane dealers in nearly every city in the US, and most all of them will do the re-cert for a reasonable fee. Sometimes even lower if you have them refill afterwards.

DOT-spec propane bottles are portable by definition, so they are normally removable from the vehicle (whether vertical or horizontal). Any place that refills DOT bottles should be able to fill them because the fill & vent valving is DOT spec and thus the same, but some may refuse simply because it is unfamiliar. Any gas supply place will know how to handle them, though.

State regulation vary, but most require that DOT-spec portable tanks be removed for filling, whether vertical or horizontal. Even a place like Flying J will very likely require that DOT removable tanks actually be removed for filling. Obviously fixed mount (ASME spec) tanks aren't removed for filling, but that is irrelevant.

The bottom line is that DOT bottles are treated the same regardless of shape - vertical vs horizontal makes no difference.

I've got two forklift tanks on our coach, mounted horizontally.

I took them to a local propane dealer a couple of years ago to be re-certified.

Since then, they've been filled while mounted with no problem. Larger U-Haul dealers usually can do this, as can many farm stores. Never had anyone ask me to remove them from the coach, but it could easily be done by removing one bolt on each one.

Most likely because they are mounted like a permanent tank and with panel in place they don't appear to be removable cylinders
They have a standard FILL valve and 'Bleeder Valve' --- standard LP Cylinders have all of that via the OPD valve

Still had to recertify them as all DOT cylinders do.
