Host battery charging question....
Hi y'all! Just a question: cab you charge your house batteries overnight on an outside charger, when of they are hooked up? I t typically take them out to charge them, but was wondering if it was safe to cut that corner? Why do I take them out? My converter does not charge them, so every four to six days I have to do it manually! Thanks!

Depends on the charger.. A SMART charger yes..An older non-regulated I would not advise using under any conditions save emergency start.

I don't see why you couldn't leave the batteries in the compartment to charge them, no different than the converter charger them

If you do not have your coach plugged in then it will not do any harm to connect another charger to the house batteries, I do it often because I get a higher charge. I would be careful about leaving a charger on over night unless it is the smart style so it will not boil your batteries. You need to get the batteries up to a good 14.3 volts or more for a good charge.

If your converter is limping it would keep them charged. Things like that do not half work. It is all or nothing. What is really going on?
And yes, you can charge in place.

The converter is not charging the batteries. I eventually will replace it, but until then, I have to charge the batteries manually.

If it is not charging the batteries it is dead and you might as well disconnect it. That removes any chance it will interfere with using your external charger to charge in place.

There is a difference in terminology here. The converter does not charge batteries, the charger(usually a separate module) built into the converter does. The converter changes 120VAC to 12VDC to power your interior lights,etc. The charger is powered by the converters 120VAC side to recharge the batteries.

If you look into it I think you will find there is one set of power leads coming out of the converter/charger connecting to the 12 V line. So is the house battery bank. No other connections so what you get at the converter/charger is what you get on the house DC system charging batteries and powering up the house. That also means that any power used by the loads subtracts from the current available to charge the batteries. No separation in the system.

No worries - just hook up the external charger Plus & Minus leads and turn it on. Won't damage either the RV or its converter/charger (whether limping or dead).
