I used Streets and trips for preliminary planning. It gives you a good idea of travel times and distances between stops. I had AAA mak a trip Tic which set on the consule. I also used a book called "Next Exit" which was very handy. It lists all the main establishments at each exit on the major highways.

When we went out west, we used an old fashioned atlas and KOA guide. I did get online some and checked out Good Sams directory. We almost never reserve ahead. When we got close to quitting at night, I would start to look for possibilities or we would pick a certain place to drive to. Never had a problem finding a spot.
I think my all time favorite stop was the PaloDuro Canyon a little south of Amarillo, TX. It was a state park and we camped in the bottom of the canyon. I can't wait to go back.
