Did I miss any new tech solar starters (magnifying glass) for those that want to be green?

I have a supply of “fat wood” I use. It’s a natural wood off pine trees that is heavy in sap that will start burning with a lighter.

I, too, relish using my scouting skills to start campfires. That said, we’ve had some fire starters in the camper for decades that get used from time to time when kindling isn’t available. The original packaging is long disintegrated, but these look similar:

I don't use those to start a campfire but yes, I was amazed the first time I saw them demonstrated. The even better part about using the battery and steel wool is that they do real well in windy conditions.

Try this!

Cut the top off an aluminum beer can. Half fill it with whatever sand / dry light dirt is around, pour either diesel, charcoal starter, kerosene, or even gasoline (trust me) into the sand, but not over it. In other words, all the liquid is absorbed into the sand.

Place this upright in the center and place your sticks, kindlin, logs, etc. around it as you would any camp fire.

Believe it or not, you can light this with any match or fire stick with absolutely no flair up or anything scary at all. It will burn slowly for quite some time while it ignites all the other wood in your fire.

I was leery and very cautious the first few times, but after years of using this method, I find it easy and effective.

While we're talking camp fires, have any of you tried the "Mystical Fire Plus" packets? They are amazing and one or two packets will produce beautiful stunning colors in the flames for an hour or so. You'll be the envy of the campground!

We call that LIGHTER KNOT! Always keep some around. It's found in the base of a down pine tree.

Works great, but one caution: I watched a woman do this, but with a cut-off water bottle.

Don't be her. It didn't go well.

I've always known it as "rich lighter pine". Just a little strip of it will get things going.
