Let's not all panic here. Fires are rare. Theft is rare. We don't carry much. Blow outs are rare.
I've spent 4x on insurance compared to claims.
Protect your property, dont go in problem areas, look for potential problems before they can occur. I carry high deductibles because very low claims.

A couple observations about this:

1. Actual Cash Value (ACV) vs Replacement Value would make a big difference in the total coverage you want. ACV heavily depreciates clothing, outdoor accessories, etc. and puts a big dent in the payout. If you do have replacement value coverage, ask to make sure it applies to the PP as well as Collision & Comp.

2. Anything not physically part of the RV might be considered "Personal Property" instead of part of the Collision or Comprehensive loss. Tow bar, front end bra or shield, maybe even awnings. One insurer we had considered anything that was screwed, snapped, or pinned to the exterior to be personal property, even if it was OEM standard equipment. I had a lengthy argument with them about that, but in the end they wore me down. We had enough PP coverage to be fully reimbursed anyway, and I have had to sue them to get it covered otherwise.

3. Take lots of photos and videos, both as a reminder for you and evidence for the insurer. It's an easy way to keep and later update a basic record and you don't have to do much actual record-keeping work unless you have a major loss.

4. You can lose personal stuff even in a collision. Think of the stuff in the basement bays of a motorhome and what happens in a major accident.

5. PP premiums are usually modest and often it doesn't cost a lot more to have plenty of coverage.

She wants to double it to 40K. I just don't get it. There is no way we have that much in stuff. I would agree if this was coverage for the appliances and furniture-maybe. I am assuming those big ticket items would be part of the MH comprehensive, right?

I read the policy but that wasn't much help. Am I seeing this right?
Just to chime in here - What does it cost????????????????

How do you have a discussion without the Numbers $$$$$$?

My DW usually handles all the bills so my only recollection of personal property insurance has me remembering it was a very small amount to add 10 or 20K in PP insurance.

So am I they only one who wonders "What will it cost to increase it to 40K"?

Let us know and then we can give you some intelligent input.

We travel with a fair amount of tools and technology, as I think most FT RV'ers do. And a couple of pretty nice bicycles and two kayaks. In our case, the Contents Coverage we ended up with was much higher than we initially thought, too.

It adds up quickly...

Except for medical insurance and liability insurance I think most responsible people are over insured, including me. I spend thousands each year on insurance with almost no return. Most of us will never have a RV claim or homeowners claim and an incredible small amount of us will ever file a claim on an entire loss.
Perhaps a more rational approach to insurance would be to insure what you cannot afford to replace. I wish I had taken that approach years ago. But maybe I'm just lucky.

Just my opinion.

I have a Progressive FT policy. The section on personal property coverage is actually pretty helpful. For example, in my policy, there is a $500 limit on any individual item of personal property.

And there are limits on groups of items--for example, there is a $1000 limit on coverage for "non-motorized recreational equipment, firearms, firearm-related equipment, ammunition, and fishing, golf and skiing equipment." A couple of bikes and sets of golf clubs and a gun could send you way over $1000. You'd have to insure those items separately (as "scheduled personal property") to have them fully covered, and you have to provide receipts or an appraisal.

Same with jewelry--there's a $1000 limit in my policy for all jewelry unless it is individually scheduled, and the same $500 per item limit applies there, too.

And, it it my understanding that unless the item is insured as scheduled personal property, it's not covered if it's not in the RV. So if your bike gets stolen from in front of a restaurant, it's covered only if you've specifically insured it as scheduled personal property.

The yearly premium for my scheduled personal property works out to be about 1% of the value of the item.

So don't assume you can just pick a number like $40,000 and you'll get $40,000 if everything goes up in flames, or that all you have to worry about is the total, or that items are covered if they're stolen from somewhere other than the RV.

Is this a South Dakota policy?
