How to check if inverter and batteries are good
I have a Xantrex pro 1000 with 4 6 v batteries. I have been plugged in 50 amp for about 3 weeks. Recently there has been a new noise humming, (as well as fan humming which is normal) coming from my inverter. Temps have been below freezing. Right now batteries are at 13 to 13.3 on remote.
What can I do and how do I do it, to see if batteries or inverter are doing what they are suppose to do.
Or is this normal. Dont do anything?
I am challenged at this stuff. But I can follow directions well
Thanks for the help.

I'm certainly no expert but my invertor does the same thing, so I believe it's normal. My batteries usually run at 13.4/13.6 V.

I see no reason the fan should run while connected to shore power. Your Xantrex Pro XM 1000 is not a charger - it merely passes through from shore power while it is available. The Xantrex shouldn't be warm enough to need a fan while in pass-through mode. And certainly no extra sounds! Further, the Preo 1000 has nothing to do with battery voltage while on shore power.
Is your converter/charger near by? That is more likely the source of any noises while on shore power. It is continuously producing 12v power for use as well as battery charging and is the source of that 13.0-13.3v you are seeing at the batteries.

If your inverter is warm, check that it has incoming 120 volt power. It may be powering stuff from the batteries, in invert mode.
Turn off the inverter and see if things shut down.

Disconnect the 6v from everything including each other. let them sit for half a day to dissipate the float charge. Test with a volt meter. They should all read at least 6.3volts. Check their water and then test with a load tester.

Ok like I said I am challenged with this kind of stuff. The inverter and converter are on opposite sides of the coach. Like you I see no reason for the fan to blow or a humming sound to come from the inverter. That is why I am asking for help. The inverter is not warm to touch, again why is the fan blowing.
SO any suggestions?

Thanks for the help. The inverter is not warm to touch. I know this is stupid but how do you turn the inverter off? I am plugged in to power. What kind of things may turn off

Hi, Too-
http://www.xantrex.com/documents/Pow...C(artwork).pdf is the manual for your inverter. On manual page 2-2 (PDF pg 17) it says there is no fan in the 1000 W model.
The inverter control may be on the unit or it may be remotely installed in your coach. Manual page 4.2 )PDF 49 of 81 pg) shows a close up of the control and there's an on-off button! Note that the button will not fully remove the inverter from the circuit, only that it will turn off the invert function.
The diagram in Figure 3.1 shows a typical installation with a battery disconnect switch between the battery bank + lead and the inverter's + input terminal.
As another reply noted, this Xantrex is not part of your battery charging. The Fine Manual has diagrams of how a coach might be wired to include the inverter and separate converter/charger.
Good luck.

Should be a push button switch on the front if it.

WOW that is some heavy reading. But very helpful. Thank you. No where did I read about a fan or noise. Maybe as RV said its coming from somewhere else. This electrical stuff is...well...over my head.

Your Pro 1000 does have a fan - it moves air thru the grill in the rear of the unit. It is thermostatically controlled, so it ought to run only when needed, and it should never be needed when merely passing through shore power.
The On/Off switch is on the front panel, but that panel is a detachable module that may be installed up to 25 ft away (it is a wired remote). The On/Off button controls only the inverting-from-battery function and has no effect on 120v pass-through from shore power. The panel also has a Status light to show whether it is passing-thru or inverting from battery. The light is Green for pass-through and Yellow for inverting. A Red light is for a fault (error status). Check to see what the indicator light shows. See page 4-2 of the manual to learn about what is displayed on the panel.
