Identifying Roof Type

Hi All,

I currently have a 1986 Overland 30 foot class A motorhome. It's traveling days are over with a blown engine, but I have it on my property and am living in it temporarily while I build a house. The roof has a few small leaks and I am trying to recoat it.

I purchased the Dicor EPDM roof reseal kit, but I am starting to question whether I have a rubber roof or not. The roof is a silver/grayish color.

Can anyone provide some information or tests I can do to verify I do have a rubber roof or what type of roof I do have?

Thanks,

bb

There are 4 types of roofs
1) Aluminum
2) Rubber
3) TPO
4) Fiberglass
We can pretty much rule out aluminum and fiberglass leaving TPO and rubber. Since TPO wasn't used much before the mid 1990's I'm pretty sure ypu have rubber.
Rubber will have a black color under the top color.

Well, that's what I thought... My last coach was a Safari Trek and it did have a fiberglass roof. I remember one of the distinctive points about it was that it was called a floating roof in that it didn't appear to be attached except at the end points. When you walk on it, it would bounce up and down.

This roof does that as well. It does look like metal. I just couldn't believe it was metal. I thought it was possibly a coat someone put on it. It's actually in pretty remarkable condition for being in Washington and having sat in a RV dealer lot for 10 years with no maintenance until he decided to go out of business. Last night after posting, I decided to get up on the roof with some sandpaper and take it down to whatever layer I could.

When I run the sandpaper over it, there are no layers. It just scuffs up like metal would. I put a magnet over it and it is not magnetic, so the only conclusion I can make is that it is aluminum.

I'm not sure if it was built this way as I have been able to find zero information on it on the internet. Perhaps a previous owner replaced the roof at some point?

Anyways, it looks like it is time to return all of the Dicor EPDM coating that I bought.

Why? Fiberglass roofs weren't very common back then, but metal (aluminum or galvanized) was. Heck, I had a 1988 Wilderness trailer with a galvanized tin roof.

I suggest removing the caulk around a roof skylight vent (which probably needs to be done anyway) and exposing an edge of the roof covering to determine what it is. However, the Dicor rubber roof kit should probably work ok on metal as well. I wouldn't use it on TPO, but since TPO was a brand new material in 1986, it is highly unlikely to be that material.
