Inspecting a new coach
I've read some terrible stories about major problems even with a new unit. Would there be anything wrong with me requesting an RV inspector to go over the unit? I realize I'll be paying for the inspection. Didn't know if this is normal. Thanks

Not sure if you meant inspections for new or used units. Sorry, long day and brain fried.
For used RVs, yes, it's normal.
I bought one new coach from a dealer on the lot (not the factory). I didn't know how common new unit inspections are. I didn't think of it. Interesting idea.
I'll defer to the folks much more knowledgable than I.

It is very normal to hire and inspector to check out a used rig, unless you are knowledgeable enough to do it yourself. If a DP, also normal to send fluids for analysis.

Most dealerships will balk at requesting a outside inspector prior to the deal. Both new and used. They will say their inspection is just as good (not).
Private parties will generally allow it, depending on the seller's mood. If they are trying to hide something, they will refuse. They see it as a way for you to offer less. At that point you walk.
Good luck in your hunt.

If anyone (dealer or individual) balks at your writing a contract for $XX subject to inspection with inspection to be complete by YY date, RUN.

I think if your new coach had a major issue at pick up, it would be pretty obvious. You're obviously not going to take fluid samples on a new engine. If something big is going to break, it's going to occur down the road, after you leave the dealership, so I doubt an inspection is going to reveal a major issue.
Lastly, you get an inspection because once you buy a used unit, the issues are yours. With a new unit, it has a warranty.

I don't see a problem in doing that if you are willing to pay for the inspection.

On a new coach, I would insist, at my expense, a leak test of the entire unit. Having bought a new unit and had minor window leaks within days of getting it home, it's worth the money. Either the dealer does it or there are mobile RV leak testing companies. You should be there when the test is done too.

Problems even with inspection of new coach
We had a level 2 inspection done on our new 25' BPlus/C. The leveling system wasn't working when we went to pick up the rig, and the rep from the dealer said "Oh, it was working when the inspector was here. It's fine"
So we drove off and have been living out of level for three weeks on the road.
We are brand new to RVing and paid $700 for the inspection so we wouldn't have any bad surprises. I guess choose your inspector carefully.

Keep in mind it may have worked fine for the inspector

If you are new to RVing and not mechanical minded, I highly recommend that you hire an independent certified RV inspector to check over the RV in detail. Make sure the dealer knows that you will not accept delivery of the RV until it can pass 100% correct. Do not accept any item that will be fixed when you come back for warranty work. Once you are off the lot, they had just a soon forget you existed.
