Sandra, I retired 20 years ago so I can only speak of the olden times when if you were a victim of a crime on post/base you would file a claim to be reinbursed for damages. When you return from your trip inquire at the Provost office. Here we have Kingsley Oregon Air National Guard Base; they are no longer issuing vehicle stickers in favor of id checks. I have been told the stickers are being phased out service wide. Happy Trails!!

Is there an easy way to change out the storage locks?

Changing the compartment locks is easy. Our local locksmith has the replacement locks so I would imagine most others would also. Inside the door remove the nut, remove the locking tab and slide off the retaining spring and the lock will slide out the front. They come in different lenths so bring one to the locksmith to be sure you get a proper replacement. If you can, take a picture before removal to assist with correct replacement.

Not long after we got the Hurricane, I went through and changed all the outside locks (including the outside engine access). I also added locks to the battery compartment and the generator compartment.

I used a barrel key to secure the compartments as I see those as slightly safer then the flat keys that are out there. I've done lock work before, so changing them myself wasn't a big deal.

Well, we are back. I will look in to see if there are any paths I can take here for reimbursement. My insurance deductible is $250 so that is out.

While I was gone there was a neighborhood crime meeting that my neighbor attended. It turns out that a few homes on our block have been broken into as well. There is a fence at the back of our neighborhood that has a hole in it. We were told to keep our houses locked and to buy security locks for our windows that beep when they are opened so that you will be alerted if someone tries to come in. WHAT!!!! In other words... we are on our own!! How about fixing the hole that you know is there, putting in extra patrols, serveillance (sp?) cameras, etc. There are quite a few people who are moving out because of this. I am glad that we are moving.

In VA we stayed at Cheatham Annex and went to Ft. Eustis. At Cheatham Annex they checked both of our IDs each time we entered, gave our DoD sticker is good hard look, and inspected our license plate. At Ft. Eustis they did the same, but did not check the plate. I saw many cars turned away. I know Ft. Polk is secure because when we visited there while dh was going through the process of being commissioned, we were stopped, asked for our license and registration, our info was written down and we were given a pass for our window. It was the same thing at Ft. Jackson when I visited dh there and did not have a DoD sticker. Even though I had an ID, they made me go through a different entrance and our info was checked and written down.

Anyway, I guess this lack of concern over our safety in housing has something to do with housing privatization. Since the army no longer runs the housing, they are lacksidasical about it. I don't know but it is frustrating.
