Jersey to Camp Hatteras

My wife and I are spending the 4th in Camp Hatteras.

As of this moment my plan was to skirt around DC by driving west on 78 and picking up 81. I was going to cross over on Rt 66 then take 17 to 95. I did this for my trip to Key West and other than the post Christmas snow storm it worked out nicely.

However, looking at the map I was wondering if it would be better to just head south and go through Delaware and over the Chesapeake bay bridge and tunnel? It seems nicer at least.

We went north that way a couple of years ago through the Bay/bridge tunnel and then took the ferry over to Cape May. Other than some really bad weather on the ferry, it was a great trip. Keep in mind, the tunnel height is (or was) 13'6". We are 13'2" and were hoping they hadn't added a new layer of asphalt since the signs were put up. (We came though intact)

That must have been interesting! My coach is 12'9" so hopefully I wouldn't have a problem either. I hadn't considered the ferry but that sounds like a fun way to kill some time.

This route shaves 170 miles off my route which pays the $70.00 ferry rate. No restrictions at the CBBT for the on-board propane so it's a definite alternative.

There's a huge rest area on the GSP just 21 miles north of the ferry so we will leave as planned on Friday night and spend the night there so traffic delays won't be an issue. I'll make reservations for 6:30 which has an arrival time of 7:55. It's a short, 7 hour drive, to Camp Hatteras from there.

Thanks for your post, you made my night!
