Key lock stuck at shore cable compartment

Mildly desperate situation - wife taking motor home from Michgan to Florida and back starting tomorrow afternoon. I just went out to connect the shore power cable to get the frig/freezer cold by tomorrow.

But none of the three keys I have will open the compartment. All the keys seem to be all the way in the lock, but it won't turn.

Any idea for a desperate measure to try to get this thing open? We just used it yesterday morning with no trouble.

1. Spray lock Cylinder with silicone or WD-40.

2. Use knee to gently move the door in a bit in case it is sticking.

3. Use a penetrating fluid on lock cylinder if 1 doesn’t work.

You have to get the key to move a bit for any spray to be effective.

Hope this helps.

Spray WD-40 in key hole; then put correct key in use a light hammer or other object to tap key all the way in and try turning it back and forth but not too hard and not twist or break key... just work on it and unfreeze the mechanism. I've had this happen before, and usually preserverence and patience will work. Otherwise you may have to break the lock or call a locksmith.

My key will go in either direction in all my storage compartment door locks, but will only unlock/lock when installed in the correct orientation.

Yes, make sure the key is going in right. I also can insert my keys either direction, but only one way will work.

WD40 dries to a gummy waterproof film, that will cause the tumblers to stick when it dries out. It is not a lubricant! WD40 brand does make a spray lubricant now, it's not the same formula as the original WD40.

Yeah, I knew that WD40 dries out... didn't know that WD also makes a spray lube that doesn't dry out. However, I suggested WD40 cuz it's something that is often on-hand and this was an "emergency." I should have also said that once the luck became "unstuck" to use a lubricant that doesn't dry out for permanent fix. Back in the day, when I worked for the power company, we would spray WD40 on recalatrant company padlocks that were froze up. The stuff was always around and handy...

Well, did you get the compartment open?

I use gun oil. It doesn't dry out. I keep a can handy for sticky stuff.

Yes, we did eventually get it open. It took a lot of "jiggling" and my wife's magic touch, but it eventually opened.

I still plan on treating the locks.

Lock lubricant is graphite. Use the correct tool for a job.

You might consider replacing the key lock with a thumb turn lock. A 50 amp power cord is pretty difficult to steal when it is attached to a cord reel.
Worked for me for 15 years.

I worked at a hospital for 30 years in the maintenance dept. Our locksmith would never use graphite. He said it will eventually clog the pins and springs in the lock. He always used a cleaner such as CRC and then teflon based lock lubricant.
