Landing Gear Covers

I thought about making some landing gear covers as i cant find them online. Im not even sure if they exist. Since the RV may be sitting for a while i thought it would look nicer with some kind of cover over the landing gear jacks.

I thought about using a styrofoam block and just glueing some nice gravel to it so it looks like real stone structure but gravel is too heavy. It would be nice to have it look like stone.

Any ideas?

You might take a look at these folks.
There are some threads about them here on the forum too.

Edit: on a re-read you may be wanting to hide the entire jack, as opposed to just cover the foot. So this probably isn't what you're looking for.

Yeah i was thinking of something pillar looking either block or round. At first i thought about 3" pvc with something glued to the outside but then i would have to cut it perfectly in half and i dont have the tools for that. Thats why i was thinking styrofoam with something either wrapped or glued to the outside.

I could then just use velcro to put the two pieces together and it would look like a rock pillar.

Bob it would have to be around something not just the leg or it would look wierd i think.

Makes me wish i would have kept the styrofoam blocks from my tv set and my computer case, they would have been perfect for this project. :(

When I attended a Forest River Rally, saw where some would use a stuffed animal......because the frf folks forum is known as FROG, these are what I'd see mostly used.....Forest River Owners Group...

lol bunny slippers hee hee

Its more of an art project than a construction project im thinking. I found this and there are other vids so yes i think i need to be looking at the movie prop topics to find what i need as far as stone technique.

Try Krylon Natural Stone paints. I made a fake rock with foam and the stone paints. I primed the foam to seal it up.

I don't know if it matches the 'look' you're going for, but it gets points for being lightweight and easy to handle - how about bamboo screen?
This one is much too tall, but it gets the idea across.

@IDNative, Those Krylon Stone paints are cool - I like those.

Thanks ill check out the krylon paints. The bamboo is nice, that would be a perfect look if parked in the tropics someplace, cool idea..

But to do stone it looks like there are two main methods for basic structure:

1. Foam and using hairdryer and acetone, a knife, and a soldering gun, then paint.
2. Carboard and a thin layer of clay which you can carve the clay to look like stones then paint it.

Being at the lake it would either have to be a big bass fish on each leg or the lake stone look (diff shapes) like on a mountain cabin fireplace chimney.

Years ago I made a Styrofoam rock for a Geocache. I used a torch to melt the Styrofoam and then sprayed granite paint over it, varying the paint thickness for color differences. It looked exactly like rock, even when very close to it. Some paints melt the stuff but that could also be a good thing. I don't think the foam holds up well outdoors.

Yeah styro does collect dirt and grime outside, i think styro coolers actually may have some kind of sealer on the outside of them as they are kinda shiney. I thought about some kind of clear coat but not sure .

I was reading an article today and someone had asked how to paint the concrete foundation styro on their home that was left between the ground and their siding. They talked about different sealers and different chemicals. And someone said that one of the least expensive and long lasting things to use on styro is truck bedliner spray.

So that got me thinking maybe i could use the bedliner spray as the base coat and then use oil base ontop of that but i think in the end i will have to do some product testing first as i do have some bedliner spray handy.

But then i have to think what is the best way to do this, to make the foam look like rock inlays or cut the foam rock individually and paint the fake rock individually and then glue each rock to the base just like you would a real rock face. Then use light brown calk as groute.

That may be a better way but i sure dont want to spend a week cutting out 50 rock shapes for a simple project and then painting them individually. I even thought cheap rock print tile or even wallpaper if i could seal it properly.

Has to be a way to get this look cheap, fast, and durable...
