Heard the other day on a news report that Nueva Loredo, MX and Laredo, TX have a big time drug trafficing going on across the border. So much so they are thinking of putting a border fence 15 miles in both directions from this area.
Kinda put a snafu in my plans to follow Texas' western border all the way down to Brownsville.
Wondering what others think about how safe it would be to travel through or even spend a day/overnight in Laredo, TX or immediate area?
All advice and experiences welcome.
Joe

I was in San Antonio in April of 2006. I asked your question of several local folks, over the period of the 2 weeks I was there. Each had the same answer,,,,,,no. They would not travel to Laredo even for a day trip. They cited the reasons mentioned in your OP.

I'm curious to know why you would think that any drug traffickers (in the very unlikely event that you came across, or even recognized any) would have any interest you, if all you are doing is driving through the area?
Never let the scumbags of the world interfere with your plans. If you do, they win and you lose.

We stayed in Larado this February at Lake Casa Blanca State Park. We had no problems whatosever. The park got a little busy and noisy on the weekend (campers and picnicers), but it was mostly families. We drove downtown near the border. No problems there either.
I would certainly stay away from downtown (in most cities, not just Larado) and/or the border late at night, but we never felt threatened anywhere we went. Maybe we were just lucky, but I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Larado is host to one of the longest parades in the nation- celebrating Washington's birthday! I used to belong to a sports car club and we participated in the parade. Many of the folks there are very patriotic and proud to show it.
I see no problem but agree that the down-town is to be avoided, an I would definitely not cross the border there.

Interesting replies. Sounds like daytime visits to town may be OK, but night time should be avoided. Noticed there are no RV parks listed in the TLDirectory either for Laredo. I see the state park at the lake outside town as a viable option.
Im reconsidering my route to Brownsville, TX from CA.
Thanks all for your insight.
