If you are "handy" with mechanical stuff, you can find boat fuel tanks that are flat. I have been toying with a very similar idea using a stainless steel boat tank.

I have the 4 gallon Roto Pax they take a lot of abuse you can drive over them "accidentally" and they did not leak or split. Mine are over 10 years old. A friend had a different brand that he could not seal properly and it leaked when stored on its side, he now has a Roto Pax and has not had a problem.

Other than the Rotopax, all you've got a Spacesaver gas jug that is 9" x 9" x 20" that holds 5 gallons. See below:

Fuel Containers 1-866-670-2966 from DirtCheapATVParts.com

Some of the Tuff Jugs can be purchased with a factory rack to hold them upright.

I had an old Saab back in the 80's that had a steel gas can that fit into the spare tire. The tire was mounted flat in the trunk with the open side up. The can fit perfectly and was probably as safe a location as you could find. I doubt that I will ever see anything like that again.
