Love Bugs
Any love bug reports, south of Atlanta? I'm driving from Fort Myers to Atlanta on April 30. I haven't heard any reports yet.

Love Bugs are these little black bugs that join together having sex and swarm the roads and byways of the southern (southeastern?) US. They create issues when their bodies are smashed into your windshield, obscuring your view, and are a pain to clean from your vehicle.
They have nothing to do with Herbie or any other VW vehicles.

I don't think it's an official report. It just comments here along the lines of 'the love bugs were terrible driving down to xxxx'.
I'll be heading down to the Orlando area this weekend, so I'll know then if the love bugs are out yet.

I've only seen a handful so far this year. Last year at this time seemed worse, but I don't trust my memory anymore

They also can damage your paint if not removed within a couple days

Are they the ones that hit and stick, usualy with wings still intact, and if you try to use the ww on them you get glue-like streaks where the ww spread them across the glass? Those things are the worst to remove. Altho I once ran into random swarms of fish flies, across a freeway with a Corvette in the early 90s. When I stopped for gas the nose of the Vette looked like someone had installed shag carpet on it. Damsel flies are bad, too.

We don't see them up in my area (DFW) usually, but I wonder if the cold snap may have delayed their explosion.
All of the bad things mentioned by others are true, but perhaps understated.

Mayflies swarming on the Susquehanna have been responsible for bridge closings from time to time.

You go early you might be ok. By 9, and especially if it’s sunny, they start to come out in force. They’re starting to come out now but lessen up the further north you go. Safe travels and take one extra wiper fluid.

Apply Rejex to the front of your RV and the Love Bugs will wash right off!

Holy cow!! That pic is incredible. We (Calif) get our fair share of bugs, especially in the central valley, but I've never seen anything like that before. YIKES!

Love Bug mating seasons--once in the spring (April to May), and then again in the late summer (August to September).
Just saw a couple, coupled up at stop light here in Melbourne...so, they're on their way. Sooo, in late April, you're gonna get into some...kill as many as you can - best time to kill, after 10 am @ something over 35 MPH. Happy hunting!
